UPS ANNOUNCES PLANS TO CLOSE DECATUR AIR CARGO OPERATIONS - Decatur Tribune Despite a broad coalition of support from the community, as well as local, state and federal government officials, United Parcel Service (UPS) Wednesday announced plans to discontinue daily flight operations at the Decatur Airport, effective Feb. 4, 2009. UPS currently flies B757 cargo jets into the facility twice daily, facilitating express package services between Central Illinois andthe Louisville and Rockford UPS cargo hubs. Feeling the impact of an uncertain and declining global economy, UPS recently analyzed its entire delivery system, considering consolidations of air routes as a means of lowering costs. Like competitors DHL - which is discontinuing U.S. operations – and FedEx, UPS cited a declining shipping volume from Central Illinois as the impetus for discontinuation of the Decatur service and indicated it is revamping air operations to make the delivery system the most efficient possible without impacting customer service. |
