Hi all . Saw the retirement thread. Seems like a great place for Ignoresville. Perhaps a thread about how some were motivated to retire. Anyway a different type of thread and maybe it goes no where. But I had a neighbor recently who passed away. Guy worked for a major car manufactorer. Guy was a devoted camper , boater and family man. He always had huge family barbecues around the pool on major summer holidays. Seemed like a good guy, one who lived 4 houses down from me for 15 years yet we had never found the time to do more than wave. This guy was driving home from the plant the other day and had a massive heartattack , crashing in the concrete wall on the way home. 53 years old and close to retirement. My worst nightmare.

I remember a story about a region manager we had. One who always worked with an excess of P & vinegar. We thought the guy would probably work forever. Might have until he was flying somewhere one day and God decided to call up one of his priests. The priest happened to be sitting on the plane next to our region manager when god made his call. End result Region manager retires 3 months later or so the story goes.

Retirement is great but there's nothing like the satisfaction you get from a job well done. After looking forward to retirement my entire working life I was surprised to find that I kind of missed working with my coworkers after I left. I even missed the ones that would drive me crazy every day. My advice is to find something to appreciate every day you are working. Life is a journey so enjoy the ride.

When we retired, I envisioned sleeping in late in the mornings. Never happened. Hubby gets up at 5 and me around 6. The eyes just open up and say, "that's enough for you."

It's great to do whatever you want and not be dictated to by a clock. In fact I bought that wall clock where all the numbers have fallen in a pile and across the clock it says, 'Whatever'.....the hands still tell the correct time....but it's an "attitude clock."

I like the really close friendships we developed throughout the years at UPS. They are all over the country and we visit them and vice versa. E-mails and phone calls too. They are life long friends. It's a good time of life.

A few weeks ago I was flipping through, uh that's channel surfing now sorry, and I stumbled on the movie Crocidile Dundee which I've not seen in years. In one scene, Dundee and the girl (sorry don't remember her character name) got out of the boat for their walkabout. The guy with them told Dundee he's pick them up on Wednesday to which Dundee said OK but then quickly asked "What day is it?" Now that would be the life!

I have been retired from the Air Force since 1975 and retired from UPS since Christmas 1990. My wonderful wife and I enjoy a life of ease and come and go as we please depending on the weather and our whims.

We have a clock in the kitchen by the coffee maker which tells us what day it is. Nothing else, just the day of the week. We used to check it every morning but we have quit doing that. Who cares what day it is. Now, we look out the window to see what the weather is like and we plan our day accordingly.

It's a great life. Take care... Bill

Miss getting up at 0330 to drive feeder. Now personal trainer getting up at 0330 to train clients form 0500 to 1200, sometimes no breaks. love it. After 34 years can't get away from gettin up early.
I woke up this morning with a real desire to exercise. So I stayed in bed till the desire went away!

I know the feeling. I went out last night and did some serious drinkin' but was worried about the hangover so I decided not to stop drinkin'!

I havent been retired long enough to know what it feels like. But the salt and pepper stuff is growing on the face, first time in 30 years. It was black back then.

I seem to do a lot of running around, but little else. I hope that changes.

Hey, who's in charge of putting up the Christmas tree in Ignoresville ?? I'll help decorate it. Can we all go caroling too? Hot buttered rum when we're done! Oh, and what do we want to have for Christmas dinner? Any ideas?

Your question reminded me of what our family use to do in the 70's. In Atlanta there is a famous hamburger and hot dog joint called the Varsity which is across the street from Georgia Tech. Every Christmas night, yeah the place would be open, our family would load up and go down to the Varsity and eat chilli/slaw dogs and the best onion rings you ever ate. It started by accident one year as we went down to Atlanta for something and saw the place open and as a joke we decided to go there. It also helped we were hungry too and nothing else was open. Well that one night joke turned into a family tradition for us that remained so for many years until the Varsity decided to give it's employees a well deserved Christmas night off as well. We still had a huge meal mid day like a turkey or roast or something of that nature but come night it was chilli/slaw dogs or as they say, "give me a dog and run it through the garden!"

As ironic as it is, many of those chilli/slaw dog eatin' nights are some of our fondest memories including the one night when everyone in the joint and surprisingly there were quite a few people too started a Christmas carol sing along. Man that was some more fun.

For Christmas dinner, my vote is chilli/slaw dogs and onion rings!

Bah humbug. Are there no work houses for the poor? Am I expected to feed every begger that shows up at my doorstoop. Peak is here . I'm in full peak mode. Love the smell of napalm in the morning . hate everything chistmassy.

Here's the Hot Buttered Rum....

1 stick unsalted butter, softened
2 cups light brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
Pinch ground cloves
Pinch salt
Bottle dark rum
Boiling water

In a bowl, cream together the butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Refrigerate until almost firm. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the butter mixture into 12 small mugs. Pour about 3 ounces of rum into each mug (filling about halfway). Top with boiling water (to fill the remaining half), stir well, and serve immediately.
