I have a stike prediction. I'm going to guess that sometime before next monday we will have a hand shake agreement, and in a couple of weeks we will all get a backpay check. I don't think either side can afford a strike at this point, however I do understand part timers being upset. With gas where it is would anyone you know drive an hour, work like a dog for 3.5 hours, earn almost 30 dollars, and drive an hour home. I know people where I work that made 8 dollars an hour when they started in 1983. As a driver we sometimes forget that the majority of upsers are part time. I've been around for over 10 years and in this short time the quality of the people we are hiring has went down. No one wants to get up at 2 am for 30 bucks, (plain and simple). I ask how it is fair for me to make more with one hour of overtime, than what part timers work for in a whole shift, and in my case they probably work harder. Granted they can go get another job, but what kind of life is that. When people can feed their family better on public aid, as opposed to getting a job, what choice do you think they will make. This is the walmart effect. Come work for us for nothing, don't talk to the unions, and we will help you get government assistance. I'm all for free enterprise, but you also have to remember that the middle class is not a natural occurance, it has to be created. At the same time unions can't get so strong that they suck the life out of the employer. It is a fine line that must be balanced. I would urge every upser out there to talk the DHLs and FED EXs and talk to your local BA, and let's unionize these places. It would make everyones life alot easier, UPS management and union employees. If pay isn't an issue customers would ship based on quality, not price, and ups would win everytime. We would go back to the old days where FED EX and other carriers would only get the accounts that we don't want. Food for thought????
