It's extremely easy to burn those routes up.

I'm still here. I don't have this forum attached to an email I check. So when there is a lot of activity. I lose my posts.
Your thinking because I choose to work harder and perhaps a bit fairer then others, that I'll do someone else's work?
Please.
One thing you've all missed. I'm not losing money. I don't take my lunch 85% of the time. I'm still getting paid for that time. We start at 8:50am. Kind of nice if I'm punching out at 6pm with almost a 9.5 day.
I get home early to spend time with my kids.....
I'm not giving any money away. UPS while may want me to take my lunch....isn't all that upset since my numbers clearly show me not taking advantage of them and stealing time.
It's a win win. |

While at FedEx in the Aspire program I quickly became aware of the fact that I would not make a good manager.
I speak my mind. I'm stubborn. I lead by example and would not delegate all that well. I also lack the ability to be able to look at someone and tell half truths and get that person to trust the info.
Far too much information given to us by Managers while not completely false are clouded and only partly true. Thats not me and I do call them on it in PCM's.
We all have faults....I'm happy knowing that I'm a type of person who will put full effort into any job I've had. Regardless of what others think. Obviously in the past in non-union shops I've been far better rewarded.
Though thats not going to change my work ethic. |

In our last locals meeting, we actually had more part timers show up than full timers. Was quite proud to see the turnout. |

Rep Power: 363 | Re: Young Drivers i used to burn up routes for the 1st 2-3 years at UPS, punch in lunch on the road back from the route. Wanted to get home, go party & spend time with the woman. And who wants to eat dinner at 9 or 10pm? Now I realize its not worth it, I'd normally just spend that extra hour in traffic driving home so why not make the extra cash. I dont think the old timers had it as bad as most of them say they do but I definitely admire them for doing this job for so many years. I've hurt my back twice now & I'm only 30 so when I see these guys who have been driving 20+ years I'm in just in awe as to how they did it so long. Personally I think the company & the union have gone downhill in the past 4 years. 4 years ago I loved the job, great CM, great shop steward & only a handful of guys were over 9/5. Then we got PAS & the company expects a lot more, 9/5 is out the window. |

If it was SO much different years ago and was a harder environment to deal with.....why the complaining now? It should be all roses with us reaping the benefits. Yes? No?
Seems to me.....it's all about how you look at it. We do less miles and more stops and handle more packages then you guys did YEARS ago. Sure you had your beefs....the beefs may be different but there are still beefs today.
My family comes first.....I burn routes up so I can get home to spend time with my kids. I used to run lunches to do so. Trust me if I was coming in early from burning a lunch and they asked me to do more......sure right after I sit here for an hour on BREAK.
Now they have to pay us for all time we are on the clock.....so running a lunch doesn't change much other then I GET that hour of pay. | well put! many older drivers on this site that think us unger guys have it made somehow.

Hate to tell you.....I was a FedEx courier for almost 4 years before coming here, a highly regarded one at that.
As to making an "old timer" look bad? Please. The one's that follow the methods can not have their routes destroyed by a young gun. My determination to work harder MAY gain me 20 to 30 minutes over the day of a proper "old timer". NO ONE from management is going to question one of those drivers.
Though when you have other "old timers" running almost 2.5 to 3 over and EVERY cover driver runs .5 to 1 over on the same route.......you've got a problem there.
I don't try to make anyone look bad.....but I'm not going to STEAL time due to me being more efficient then the bid driver. Worrying about his feelings.
The fact of the matter is....you "Old Timers" worked for a different beast. We work for a publicly traded company worrying about it's stock holders.
While YOU may have waged a war on some fronts in the past, we are benefiting from. WE OURSELVES are waging another war that FUTURE drivers will be benefiting from.
It's all the same.....the original poster talked as if UPS was a far worse place to be back then. Though if you read into this board much at all.....it seems like people STILL only complain about the Company.
So has nothing changed? | i like you. hahah...

Seniority doesn't give you the right to refuse your own work. It gives you the right to take extra work or deny it as long as some one with less/more is present at the same time.
Why your guys panties are all in a bunch because some one actually performs at his job |

Why your guys panties are all in a bunch because some one actually performs at his job | Everyone who gets paid by UPS as a driver performs at their job, whether you want to believe that or not. Most just understand the basic math and logic behind being an hourly employee, this is foreign to you. Just wait until you get a gungho CM at your center, you won't have to help anyone else because the work will be added to your route permanently. If your "burning up" routes as a swing driver, that is just plain idiotic. Are you one of the geniuses that shows up at pickups 3hrs early and leaves because they aren't ready? I have a feeling you don't really burn routes up, maybe in your mind you do, but if you are getting back later than 5pm you aren't burning anything up. |

Sounds like a good business practice right there! | So when you wrench your knee tomorrow "burning up a route" you think it is ok for UPS to just toss you to the curb because you are no longer useful to them? This job is a marathon, not a sprint, and you are setting yourself up for exactly what you are asking for.
