Miss America can be any color, religion etc. Miss Black America is what it is......
I don't get it.
As far as the best man for the job?? It should be the best man for the job no matter what the color.
OK, now I'm a racist!! | J. Morris Anderson first created and produced the Miss Black America Pageant on August 17, 1968, it was a local Philadelphia area pageant to protest the lack of black women in the Miss America pageant.
Some may forget, but not too long ago, Black men and women were considered ugly. They were not represented in all aspects of our society. During Jim Crowe and segregation, Black American's created their own systems of entertainment and pride. Many of these organizations are an outgrowth of having lived and survived a civilization of exclusion and racism.
Just imagine if Blacks enslaved us Whites for hundreds of years. And then they yelled and screamed at all our White pride and Affirmative Action plans trying to overturn some of the unjust wrongdoings of institutionalized racism. Doesn't knowing our countries history make it a little easier to understand why we have some of the systems we have in place today?

So no, I can't imagine it and neither can any black person because it didn't happen to them and I didn't do it either.

As far as the original thread starting, exactly what kind of knot was tied in the trailer door pull down strap? Was the knot really a noose, or just a loop tied in the end of a rope? We used to make our own straps back when I drove a straight truck, sometimes it might be a loop or just an overhand knot.
I think that everyone has been discriminated against in one way or another. |

My bad, instead:
Just imagine that you lived in a country where your ancestors (White men and women) were enslaved by Black ancestors. Let's pretend that our groups had the same history we do today but just that our roles were reversed...
Now put yourself in the shoes of a Black person who works for UPS reading this forum with all the people yelling that they are not qualified, afforded special privileges, etc.
It's sometimes helpful to understand a situation when you put yourself in the shoes of the people you seem to be so upset with...

All the white drivers make over $28 an hour, but the poor black guy(because he is black) only makes $19 an hour and gets no benefits. His truck is never washed and is in the back of the building. He gets no vacation days and is often forced to work off the clock. Our white mechanic refuses to fix his truck when its written up, saying "Ill get to it when I can". Yeah, stuff like this goes on all the time because of racism. Of course Im being sarcastic, but we need to stop being so hyper-sensitive about race. Athena, Adverse Impact is a term invented by the govt. as a way to reverse discriminate against whites. |

I think that everyone has been discriminated against in one way or another. | I'm not sure anyone on this forum has any idea what the knot looked like. I will tell you, however, that a noose is a very distinct knot. It is a symbol of terrorism used to intimidate and strike fear in its intended targets. A noose is a symbol of hatred used to lynch Blacks in the old south for many years. The noose is particularly disturbing in the sense that Whites would sometimes gather for a picnic and social hour which ended by the hanging of a Black person in the old south (there are several pictures taken of Whites gathered around a dead body). The noose now sends a message to a person, and then a group of persons, that they are not wanted.
Reactions to a noose are typically fear for ones safety among other psychological and physical ailments. Finally, a noose is a particularly cowardly symbol in the sense that the creator of the noose wants to remain invisible and it appears the message comes from a group of people. As a result, the Black workers may fear all of the White workers.
The use of nooses to intimidate minority workers is on the rise and the EEOC now has a special office that tracks the occurrence's of nooses. Georgia tops the list of noose findings. http://www.eeoc.gov/press/7-13-00-b.html

Adverse impact alone is not enough of a reason for an employer to get into trouble for having too few minorities in a job. In fact, an employer would be just as liable for choosing unqualified or underqualified minority group individuals over majority group individuals. Adverse impact is simply a numerical calculation to see if there is potentially discriminatory practices in a company.
There are many, many regulations, precendents set by court cases, scientific research, and so on that go into deciding what is legal and illegal. Trust me, companies can not just hire someone who is a minority because he/she is a minority. They must have valid selection procedures regardless of the demographic mix of a company.
If fact, companies have been held responsible when they took the easy route and based hiring decisions on race alone. It isn't ever okay to use race as the sole basis for hiring/promotion decisions.

First, selection procedures are never perfect at predicting future performance. So, lets say a majority group member has a score on a selection test of 97 and a minority group member has a score of 95. The scores for the test are entered into an equation and the predicted future performance for the majority group member is 95 (out of 100) and for the minority group member it is 93 (out of 100).
Lets say this predicted performance score means that the majority group member will perform sucessfully as a manager 95% of the time while the minority group member will perform successfully 94% of the time. The problem with this prediction is it is not perfect. Lets say that the error in the prediction is + or - 2 percentage points. That means that potentially, the majority group member will perform successfully somewhere between 93-97% of the time while the minority group member will potentially perform successfully 92-96% of the time. These individuals would be expected to be equally successful.
While it may seem worth it to chose the person with the higher score, the amount of error in the prediction leaves something to be desired in the predicted performance. Diversity in organizations has been shown to be very beneficial and it is expected that both individuals would perform equally well. The company would be justified in selecting the minority group member to increase diversity. It is not reverse discrimination and it is important to note demographic characteristics, it is a well thought out business plan.

How can you even say that??? This IS a world where the white man IS the most disriminated against.
Hiring quotas. Do you know what that means? It means corporations HAVE to hire minorities even though a white man is more qualified for the job.
How 'bout layoffs? Well, we had to lay off the more qualified white man instead of the minority or we wouldn't have enough minorities. | Refer to my response to BLACKNPROUD for an example of how things are suppose to work when making these decisions. Quote:

The FBI website shows 58.6% of offenders are white, 20.6% are black, 5.7% were groups made up of more than one race, 1% was Asian/Pacific Islander and 1% was American Indian/Alaskan Native with an additional 12.9% unknown offenders.
Just a side note, not all the victims were black. 21% of the victims were victims b/c of anti-white bias.

I am not going to defend every person out there who is making speeches about racism. I never said that there weren't individuals out there that didn't take it too far. However, I get the impression that you would just rather we all ignore it. Some have been trying to do that for decades. It doesn't work and it is unethical. Try to imagine a world where whites are the ones being discriminated against and then tell me that your tune wouldn't change just a bit. I don't think my tune needs to change. I will fully support and agree with your intentions on this issue even when I disagree with the merits of an individual case. When politics are involved I become suspicious. MLK was a terrific leader who proactively drove the issue of equality. Jesse jackson has been a poor successor looking for opportunities to shove his face back in the limelight. Many of your white liberal politician have historys that reek of oppression but suddenly as they get into politics they learn to love the man or women of color.
