what are "rep points?"

I keept hearing references to "rep points" on this forum, I'm pretty new here and I dont get what they mean. I do know they are related to the little green squares by my avatar but other than that, what are they?

If you post something in the bc that someone feels is inspiring,they have the option of clicking on the little scales of justice at the bottom left,this can give you positive or negative rep points.It really means nothing.

It is fun to see how your comments are rated...although calling someone's BS seems to get negative feedback. Feelings and such...
