One case scenario fuss : Yesterday while delivering an extended town route( 60 miles), I had 30 stops left @ 5:00pm and my air was supposed to be back at the home center at 6:30pm (no exceptions). The other driver in the area had 7 stops left. With the computer showing this info an uninformed OMS or FT sup would jump on that to instruct us to split up the remaining stops. The problem is (and will be) the driver with only 7 stops left also has around 130 miles to drive to get those stops delivered , then start his 60 mile return trip to the center. It only took me 10 to 15 minutes to explain all this to the uninformed OMS. BTW, I actually started calling the OMS around 3:30 with predictions of what came to be reality.

Technology is designed to provide information to an informed user so that the operation can run more smoothly; however, as Trpl noted, this information, when provided to an uninformed user, may as well have been in Chinese for all that it was worth.

Forty6and2, it sounds to me as though you do a great job but it also sounds as though you may need to slow down a bit or you may very well be asked to help out others who may not be as smooth with the methods as you appear to be.

This technology doesn't come cheap. Obviously they have more money than they know what to do with.

That being said, let them have at it. If they feel better about knowing what you do every minute of the day, so be it. It's no different than being a factory worker on the production line. Doing everything by the book (methods) and not taking the time to address a customers concerns will be an additional cost above and beyond the cost of all this technology.

Just because something is possible, doesn't necessarily make it a good idea. The cost of all this technology ultimately gets passed on to the customer. Rates are already ridiculous. Maybe customers will turn to a company that's not so obsessed with tracking its' employees every move and to one that is more concerned with tracking their shipment.

The technology is out there and it is not expensive. We have a lot here and can gather a great deal of info in a very short period of time. The newer cars have a black box in them that records a lot of things that you would not believe. Our equipment is monitored by small sensors in them that can even take measurements. Cameras all over, small ones...I work as directed and do not wory about what info they gather. The new technology will be included in a lot of the things we buy.....

And as a citizen of the U.S.......this doesn't bother you why?

I'm not worried about the info they gather on me while I'm working. I just think that it's a waste of money. If they have no trust in their employees, what is left? Sure, there are those few that "work the system". But to put all under a microscope is being just a little (no...a lot) paranoid.

As a citizen, I am more concerned about these type of technologies being used on a much broader basis by our government.

Freedom and a right to privacy are becoming rarer and rarer. And if your not the least bit concerned, you might end up regreting that apathy later.

well the truth is...i'm not really that good- i just like to do a good job and i probably should slow down a bit so ups will stop expecting so much from me.

It would not matter to me how many stops I had left as I would not give work to another driver. Not that I would want overtime, but they can not take work from you and give it to another driver. Go ahead and jump on me, but there is language in the supplement where I work to cover that. Like I said, don't want the extra overtime, but also don't think we should need to take care of dispatching on the road. The great PAS/EDD deal should be able to send every run out with the perfect amount of stops.

Incidentally, I am on feeders right now, but usually end up on delivery frequently as things change a lot around our shack in the woods.

Alot of the drivers in our center arrived to work today with shiny new DIAD IV's to replace our worn out DIAD IV's. Smelling a rat, I asked the closing sup about it tonight. He said that additional software was added to the DIAD. Mentioned something called D.I.D. or something like that. We've had OMS-e for a few months already so I'm not really sure what the new stuff is but I'm sure we'll hear about it eventually. Anyone know anything else?

Kind of ironic really. You’ll be watched by security cameras as you shop for Orwell’s 1984.

Maybe your CM is working the preload. That does happen from time to time, particularly when the dispatch is screwed up or a new preload sup or manager is assigned to the center. Do you know what time the manager comes to work? I would guess it's while you are turning off your alarm.

Your comment regarding sending help or adjusting the dispatch on route, I have never heard of in my 28 years of UPS. What area do you work in, if you don't mind sharing. I just find your comment intriguing, regarding UPS and your local coming to agreement as you stated.
Thank for any info.

Though I rarely need or ask for help, I never stand in the way of those that desire to deliver packages assigned to my truck. My parents taught me to share.

If they are going to put a microscope up our ass at all times, then I would like to see that every minute of the managers and supervisrors day is accounted for doing something productive for the company. Lets see how the shoe feels on the other foot.

haha... yeah. good one! most of the time if my supervisors ask me to run air and then go back to building for shags or whatnot- the supervisors are in the office sitting down on their rear-ends talking trash about all the drivers. (i have walked in on them more than once as they were in the act.) its crazy some of the stuff they say about people when they aren't there to defend themselves. it only makes me wonder what they say about me when i'm not around...

Chan, are you joking? Where I am preload is often lacking in accountability to the point that they often put a lot more work in your truck that can be legally delivered in under 12 hours, hence the phone call to the center.I have 35 business stops that will be missed unless you send help.Bye.
respond asap.in the board then going on break...here we have former drivers as oncars, they know we will bring them back if we are ridiculously overdispatched.

The new technology really does work both ways. Back in the good old days, management used to dispatch what we referred to as "abortion cars." Prior to stops being tracked electronically, the only thing they cared about was getting all of the packages out of the building to maintain the illusion of a functioning operation. The "abortion car" would go out the door with everything that was left under the belt...I can remember days where 400+ stops would be forced into a p-600, and I would bring 200 of them back at 10:00 at night. The sup would just have me unload them without sheeting them as missed. That can't happen any more with EDD, there is now a level of honesty regarding stop counts and workloads that didnt exist before.
