I have a question...how is it that I can log in over 12 hours later and find a visitor message that has been approved..and it just so happens that the "approved" visitor message is completely humiliating and rude..

I'm seriously curious.

The "guest" posts have to be read by one of us Mods before we approve it and allow it to go on the board. Some of these get deleted right away. I guess the answer to your question would depend on what any individual would consider to be "completely humiliating and rude". Speaking for myself, I strongly believe in freedom of speech, but I may have a different idea from the the next person of when a certain line gets crossed. A different moderator may approve of a post that I would not. We all look at things using our personal judgment that is determined by our interpretations of what is right or wrong.

And I will also add that it has gotten too difficult to read everything that gets posted on this board. When I joined three years ago, there was usually less than a hundred people on line and a fraction of the forums. I noticed the other day that over five hundred were online at one time. If you read a bad post, please report it so the staff can address it. We depend on all of you to help police our little community.

I am speaking of the ones that get posted to our profiles. I have never had a visitor message that just gets approved without my first being notified that one is awaiting approval. I understand that we all have a difference in opinion on what might be considered "rude" or humiliating, and I did happen to report this message but I'm quite certain that if someone left the content of this message on your personal profile for people to read at will and just make assumptions without your knowing..you might feel a bit humilitated, and offended not to mention confused as to why this particular forum member decided to lash out without warning and provocation.

So that is why I ask how was it that a visitor message was able to be approved on my profile. When in the past they have not without me first choosing to approve or decline them.

Sorry, I misunderstood your question. What you are talking about is a new feature that started recently when there was a upgrade to the vBulletin software that runs this site. Thanks for reporting the post, I have already PMed that particular member about another inappropriate post. Since he has a User Account, his post went to your User Page without us reading it. I noticed that you have already deleted it, we will contact this person again and take it from there. If someone keeps bothering you, there is an "Ignore" feature that will block him from you. If this person keeps it up, we can and will ban him from this site.

Well thank you..but I am still trying to figure out how it got posted BEFORE I logged in. That make no sense. It just seems strange to me that the awful post is the one that posts directly to my profile for everyone to see..but the others i have a choice in the matter.

The software automatically posted it when you were off line. This was an inappropriate post the other User made and he will be dealt with.

Default Re: House Rules - How To Use This Forum

I searched through all of the posts on this thread and did not see the "Ignore" function mentioned. The Ignore function allows you to save a user name so that posts from that particular member do not show up in the thread(s) that you are reading. The only fault with this is that if that members' reply is used as a quote by another member in their post then the Ignore feature does not recognize that and the quote will appear in the thread that you are reading.

Why use the Ignore feature? To be frank, there are certain members whose posts I simply don't want to read, whether it be because they are rude or simply because they have little or nothing of substance to offer to the thread and instead choose to insult, degrade or otherwise demean the person or the content of the thread.

As was mentioned above, don't put too much emphasis on the reputation function. This is an anonymous forum with the purpose of allowing UPSers to gather and discuss issues common to most/all of us and to add our own personal experiences/opinions to the discussion. This discussion can get lively, which actually makes for a more interesting thread, but does not need to get personal, vindictive, or just plain rude. UPSers generally have thick skin but there are limits which should be respected by all who gather here. Keep it clean, keep it lively, and have fun while you are here and remember that we are all on the same team.

I have a question? How can a poster report you for inappropriate content, rude content, when you are merely repeating remarks that were made to you by that very poster? Are the comments of the reporter to the reportee reviewed before issuing double super secret probation. I have erased the sexually explicit remarks from my CP, is it possible to retrieve them so that I may do a little reporting of my own?

Well, yes and no. Since the site is pretty much an internet site with only a few of us actually knowing much about each other behind the scenes, you are assuming that the poster is or was brown. There have been several posters that come to mind who's only point of posting was to raise hell with other posters. To disrupt threads, to forward their own agenda which seemed only to disrupt. They end up weeding themselves out over time. But then they are replaced with others with the same agenda. So the best thing is to either use ignore, or just skip the post.

House, sometimes its best to let the past lay. As the sign says, its hard to make a good wine with sour grapes. I would not put up with crap, but no real reason to dredge up things that you have deleted.

D, thank for you the selective quote; however, if you had read my entire post and perhaps used more of it, you would have noticed that it was all about the ignore feature, or did you just "ignore" that portion that did not fit what you were trying to say? JK.

I did read the entire post. And my post is pretty much in agreement with what you posted. Or at least that is what I was attempting.

Sorry if the selection I selected was not what you would have selected, but I find that selecting the whole post and copying it wastes a lot of space, and makes it very hard to read. I also find that those posters that are a bit long winded, and dont use paragraphs to break up the rant are also very hard to follow. And no, I am not speaking of you.

D, could you be speaking of me. LOL? I tend not to break up the post I'm relying to and tend to be long-winded! I want to apologize for not getting to the point and becoming long-winded in the process.

I'm very passionate about my job and I enjoy writing about it, when somebody posts something of interest I tend to write in excess. Sorry guys!

Brownie

Not you really, but one that used to be really bad was Tie. He would post two pages of rantings, and never break it up. So hard to read, just about no one ever did.

I used to be bad about it as well I guess.

Gotta admit, its a lot easier to read.

I believe I am the mod who Okd your visitor mesage.
I did not see it as offensive as I thought you possibly had shared an inside joke I did not know about. I had no clue what it was about. Visitor message moderating is new to me, and I apologize I will look closer in the future.

My hat is off to the moderators here, and the brain child who brought this site on line. It is such a great thing to have one of our typical UPS days, and not have to vent to my wife. She tries to be supportive & understand what it is I'm groaning about, but rather to be able to bounce them out in this forum where we all have an understanding.
There has been an upset in the matrix though, and if you've read many posts lately you can see that there are a lot of "Closed" signs and I'm certain the inception of this thread is directly related.
In my humble estimation, we have to go back to the roots of why we are here in the first place, we all are related because of this big brown machine, that can grind up anyone not tenacious and tough enough to spit those freshly broken teeth right back at them.
I'm impressed with (almost) everyone that I've encountered at this site, regardless of their agreement or not. I did find the recent thread pointing a finger at us wasting our time with reading the same thread pretty childish, and somewhat voyueristic in that it wasn't a waste of his time to post it. But again, it takes all kinds. Thanks all for making and keeping this a great place to come to.

P.S. This is completely off topic, but I'm a grandfather! I thought I'd dread it, but he's a pretty charming little guy. Taint so bad after all!!
