Default Talk of layoffs after Xmas

I know after Xmas the volume drops off sharply, but MGMT in our barn is saying it expects to lay off 35 drivers out of about 125 drivers. What's the buzz everywhere else.

It's kinda early to even think about next year since we haven't even been through peak yet. However, we have seen cutbacks in the Atlanta area. Most of our cover drivers are now back in the building. I've been dealing with the route next to mine being cut out several days a week since May of this year. Of course, when this happens, the rest of us in the loop go over 9.5 and even over 10.5 and they have stopped taking that route out. It's now a planned under-dispatch which means it is intentionally loaded with under 8 hours of work and parts of the route are taken away and given to other drivers in the loop to make their routes plan to over 8 hours.

Back to the original topic. Will layoffs happen in January? Probably not until February because of the new "extended peak" phenomenon caused by all the gift card and online returns but it will probably happen in most of the country unless DHL ceases it's ground operations completely (as it is now being rumored) and we get our old customers back. That will save us. I think our economy hasn't even begun to get near it's bottom yet and it will get worse before it gets better and we will be hurting next year.

Haven't heard a word about layoffs. In fact, volume has barely gone down this year at all.

20 or so drivers all ready dropped back part time here. That doesn't include the other facility in Las Vegas. There, they laid off some drivers a couple months ago. I don't have a general figure of how many though. It will be ugly come Dec 26th.

Doesn't sound like there will be any transfers to Vegas next year.

If that's the case (and I'm not entirely sure that it is), then conservatism is completely absent from the current presidential race.

And the way things are looking in my building, I would not want to be a junior driver come January. Hopefully things will be turning around before then.

My building is in San Jose, the supposed capitol of Silicon Valley. If you watch the news around here other than the housing bubble bursting the job front is great. With that said we have recently hired drivers in our building, but volume is down, stops are down and cars are being scratched daily. So if thats how we are I can only imagine how things are in areas of the country that are being hit hard. I predict the slowest peak in my history and severe layoffs starting towards the end of January. I feel for any driver with less than 5 years under their belt.

There are many versions of the story, but the basic premise is that a chicken eats lunch one day, and believes the sky is falling down because an acorn falls on her head. She decides to tell the King, and on her journey meets other animals who join her in the quest.

In most retellings, the animals all have rhyming names such as Henny Penny, Cocky Lockey and Goosey Loosey. Finally, they come across Foxy Loxy, a fox who offers the chicken and her friends his help.
After this point, there are many endings. In the most famous one, Foxy Loxy eats the chicken's friends, but the last one, usually Cocky Lockey, survives long enough to warn the chicken and she escapes. Other endings include Foxy eating them all.

In other versions the moral is usually interpreted to mean "do not believe everything you are told". In the latter case, it could well be a cautionary tale. The Chicken jumps to a conclusion and whips the populace into mass hysteria, which the unscrupulous fox uses to manipulate them for his own benefit, some times as supper.

Sound familiar? I think some of you would do well to re-read the story and learn the moral.

I think analogies are generally a poor substitute for an actual argument, but that's probably just me

Id say unless there is a booming peak theyll be some layoffs, I wouldnt expect to see any until about the March time frame. I dont think theyll be wide spread and some of the divisions still have increasing volume

how does that work exactly..... If you are fulltime driver and are laid off do you get bumped to part time or bumped into the building as fulltime? And what about pay? How does that work?

Here if your out of progression you get driver rate for 8 hours. Though it doesn't have to be one 8 hour block.

After a certain amount of days of continuous layoff you go to what your time of service would equal at part time rate. Yet after 15 days we can bump into other buildings as well if they have less senior employees driving. Buildings same local.

Post-peak plans could include layoffs of drivers (feeders and delivery) as well as management (part-time). Don't look for any open positions to be filled in the first quarter (non-management and management).
