I guess it shouldn't be a big deal. It just seems that when somebody posts under a non registered username, most likely it is to stir the pot, so to speak. I think it is pretty easy to register a username and jump right in and start posting.

Guess I'm just curious what others think about it.

PS.I screwed up was trying to make a poll out of this thread, just have to figure out how to do it.

I believe many UPS employees are concerned that anything they might say on this post(if they were a registerd user)could some how be used against them.. You do have to give your email address. Just a thought.

Pip,
I pretty much agree with all your points. I wish that everyone would register, and include where they are from and what they do at UPS. That way everyone else could better understand their point of view. On the "Quick Links" pull down list your see on the top of your page toward the right side, is a selection called "Who's Online". It list the Registered Users first, and then the Guest Users, who are anonymous. Usually about 80% of Brown Cafe viewers are unregistered. A few of these may just be Registered Users who haven't logged on. It is easier to post something as a Registered User, after your first twenty posts, your message goes on instantly instead of waiting for one of the Moderators to log on and approve it. The present problem is a pain I admit, but it is due to the fact that we are trying to keep spam, porn, and trolls from posting. There are some people who come on sites like this just to stir up trouble.

I like to just ignore them and usually they go away. I use this method on my boss and it works.

I think everyone should be allowed to post, anonymous or registered.

After all, even us registered users are still anonymous!

Good point. Only Cheryl the site Administrator (and owner) has access to email account names and IP addresses, as long as your real name isn't in your email address, there is no way even she would know who you are. The nature of Discussion Boards like Brown Cafe is to be able to posts your thoughts anonymously, UPS is in no way connected with Brown Cafe.

In the beginning of this forum anyone could post without registering. That worked fine for a while and then porn and spam started showing up and I got to spend lots of time every day deleting posts. It eventually got to the point that there was more trash than real posts. Then for a couple of years I switched to requiring everyone to register before posting. Using that system new users still registered a couple of times a week to post spam and porn but it making them register really did slow them down. A couple of years ago I found an anti spam hack for this forum's software which puts all newbies and unregistered posters into the moderation queue and that pretty much put a stop to the porn and spam.

I admin a bunch of websites, a few of which are based on forums. In my experience forums without a system for enforcing community guidelines eventually get shut down. In fact I was contacted yesterday by the admin of a long established "free speech" forum which was recently shut down due to excessive troll activity. They are reworking their forum and she was interested in the guidelines and structure used on another of the forums I admin. The forum she wants to use as a template is actually much more restrictive than the moderation that we use here...

Do you really feel there is censorship here? I think the Moderator Team does a great job. They keep things clean, but I don't think they censor.
Maybe I'm getting old, but I don't like a forum where it is allowable to swear. I don't even like the childish way of substituting "$$" for "SS" as if that is not swearing.

no, they should not be allowed.

i can see a few of the regulars who post on here may use this to air serious concerns. this is because you want to assume that UPS officials go through this website. to mitigate this, i think we should create a private sub-forum for users that have 250 posts. this way, we have a thread open to the eyes of those that have been generally accepted by the community.

That still wont convince the majority. There's always that underlining suspicion and paranoia.

I say allow anyone to post, but if Cheryl needs them to register or do anything else to insure the integrity of this site and to protect it from the spam and porn, then so be it.

There are good arguments on both sides. I would like to see only registered users able to post. As stated above...Your info is as private as you want it to be. We are lucky to have some dedicated people working to keep this site user friendly with great threads, discussion and creative posts.

I guess there has to be some degree of trust when you post.
