Default How do I get in?

Hello UPS Tech guys...

I am about to finish school this semester for my two year degree in IT-Network Specialist. I'd like to stay at UPS. I am currently a part-time preload supervisor. That is going pretty well and all but I want into the IT department and use my degree. I currently have no knowledge of how UPS's IT dept. works. I've worked for UPS for 3 years and have only really done end user operations.

So my questions are, how do I get in? Who do I talk to? And, is it even possible to get into UPS's tech dept. with a two year degree?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

Try the upesers website for job openings and find the HR person and ask about working in the IT dept.

UPS is in a cycle of cutting back techs. It's probably not the best time to try to get a TSG job.

I know zip about IT networking, but I know that ImpactedTSG does.
UPS is cutting back everywhere. But then again they seem to do strange things with no correlation to what they do in other states depending on thier needs. My first advice would be "Run Away" but ya just never know.
Whatever road you take, beware of the brown screen of death that TSG knows all too well

When I was part time a coworker had just gotten his 2 year degree and wanted an IT job. They told him they only consider people with 4 year degrees. But your local HR person is probably a better person to ask than a forum of anonymous people.

I'm not anonymous, and I still don't know jack, about TSG.

Yeah, go somewhere else like Google or another company. TSG is in horrible shape right now and it's a terrible time to be trying to hire on.

You don't need a degree of any kind to work in TSG. You just need working knowledge of computers. Having the A+ certification will help a lot because you're required to get it within two years of joining TSG, which UPS pays for. If you already have it, then that's money savings for them and put you ahead of the pack.

Also, if you're willing to promote up and become a FT supervisor that will help a lot too. They don't want anyone that will stick around and suck up a bunch of pay. They want you to promote up so they can hire someone else that they don't have to pay as much.

Anyways, join TSG at your own risk right now. My suggestion is go somewhere else if you want to make a career out of technology.

Yep TSG does not require a degree, just the A+ Certification and join at your own RISK...
Currently our District is going through round two of cuts in three years now. The only stability you can have is years of service which appears to be the route they take to make cuts. But that is just our district...
The good news is, I have heard a rumor that our district will be using TEMPORARY Services to replace TSG Technicians in the future.
So much for the Promote from within policy... So stick with Package, move to Feeders, or move on to another company.

Check with your Human Resources, you want to put a letter of intent in. Its something you would do January of each year, stating where you want to go your experience with UPS your degree you have earned and all that.
There is so much going on at UPS now, it sure isn't the company it once was, but hey why not give it a try you have nothing to loose. For some UPS is a great place for most of us it is not..Good luck to you and congrats on that degree...that goes everywhere with you.

They told me that for years... and now that tuition reimbursement has paid for my degrees, it's blindingly obvious what I should do with them.

There are several places where there is still a need for technicians, particularly smart ones who will want to finish a 4 year degree: Louisville, Atlanta, Mahwah, and possibly CACH in Chicago.

These sites have MAJOR network infrastructure, far more complex and extensive than the average district. They need strong, highly motivated technical people to keep the blinky lights blinking, so the packages can keep moving.

Louisville is the home of the Airline, and Worldport(TM) the world's largest automated sorting facility. They have a server farm as big as the other two data centers, even though they don't call it that. (Data center)

Mahwah is the main data center, with the backup in Atlanta. CACH is a large automated hub, but not as big or automated as Louisville.

Right now, I am not sure if any hiring is going on, due to the recession. But getting your resume in can't hurt.

If all you can do is set up PC's and follow a script from an end-user phone call, there is no job for you.

If you know which lights should be blinking on the patch panel, and how to figure out what's wrong when they don't, there is more need for that, but probably only at these 4 sites. Make sure you know Linux as well as Windows networking.

I'm prejudiced: I think Louisville is the best of the 4 as a place to work. How far a relocation would that be for you?

Good luck.

TSG is a dead end. I knew a guy on special assignment that worked under J.B. to develop PMT. This was 2 years before PMT was heard of. If you can get on at UPS as a technician, learn all you can, it is great resume material, but TSG is still in the crosshairs.

How does years of service work?

I was hired in 2001 at UPS. I am a package humper, full-time. If I went TSG would I keep my company time, vacations, etc?
