UPS Info for UPSers Can package delivery save the Postal Service? - CNN

Just this week it announced a deal to deliver packages on Sundays for Amazon in New York and Los Angeles for the holiday season. And in what appears to be a direct challenge to rivals United Parcel Service and Fed Ex, the postal service said Wednesday it will start offering 10:30 a.m. priority mail express delivery, which can ensure delivery in one, two or three days, for an extra $5 fee in January.

UPS Info for UPSersPostal Service to Make Sunday Deliveries for Amazon - New York Times

The cash-short United States Postal Service, which has failed to win congressional approval to stop delivering mail on Saturdays to save money, has struck a deal with the online retailer Amazon.com to deliver the company’s packages on Sundays — a first for both, with obvious advantages for each.

The deal, announced on Sunday and taking effect immediately, in time for the holiday shopping season, gives the Postal Service a chance to take some business from United Parcel Service and FedEx, which do not deliver on Sundays. Now, some orders that would have been handled by either of those carriers for Monday delivery will go through the Postal Service and arrive on Sunday.

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) expects to ship 15 billion pieces of mail and packages between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve. USPS management claims this will be a record. The number represents a surge of 12% from last year. Although it will not be nearly enough to lift the USPS out of its dismal financial shape, it is a sign that shipping activity across the industry will be strong. That is particularly good news for United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) and FedEx Corp. (FDX), which expect a good year, and the USPS forecast supports that.

The cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service could tap a rich new revenue stream if Congress adopts the idea of two senators who want to allow it to ship alcohol, a business reserved for more than a century for its private competitors.

The Postal Service estimates alcohol shipments could bring in up to $50 million annually, a spokesman said.
