CARLISLE v. UNITED PARCEL SERVICE, INC. – Leagle

ROBERT W. CARLISLE, Plaintiff-Appellant, v. UNITED PARCEL SERVICE, INC., TEAMSTERS LOCAL 687, AN AFFILIATE OF THE INTERNATIONAL BROTHERHOOD OF TEAMSTERS, Defendants-Appellees.

Plaintiff-appellant Robert W. Carlisle (“Carlisle”) appeals from an order of the District Court granting separate motions for summary judgment filed by defendants-appellees United Parcel Service and Teamsters Local 687 (“UPS” and “the Union,” respectively). Carlisle brought suit on November 8, 2015, alleging that the Union breached its duty of fair representation under the Labor Management Relations Act § 301, 29 U.S.C. § 185, and that UPS breached the collective bargaining agreement between the Union and UPS by terminating his employment (together, the “Hybrid § 301” action). On appeal, Carlisle argues that the District Court improperly resolved genuine issues of material fact against him when it granted defendants’ motions for summary judgment. We assume the parties’ familiarity with the facts, the underlying procedural history, and the issues on appeal.

CONCLUSION
We have considered all of Carlisle’s remaining arguments and find them to be without merit.

Accordingly, for the foregoing reasons, the judgment of the District Court is AFFIRMED.

White UPS Worker Alleges He Was Fired to Appease Latino Employee – My News LA

A former United Parcel Service employee is suing the company, alleging that as a white worker he was wrongfully fired in 2017 and made a “sacrificial victim” of the firm’s desire to appease a Latino employee who had brought unfounded discrimination complaints against the package-delivery giant.

Mason McConn’s Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit alleges wrongful termination, racial discrimination, retaliation, defamation and false light invasion of privacy. Along with UPS he is suing the Latino worker, Pedro Flores, and company human resources employee Gerald Yee.

The suit filed Wednesday seeks unspecified damages and an injunction directing UPS to not discriminate or retaliate against employees.

Q&A with David Abney, 2018 Most Admired CEO Lifetime Achievement Award recipient – Atlanta Business Chronicle

Atlanta Business Chronicle just named our list of Atlanta’s Most Admired CEOs of 2018. They are scheduled to be honored on Aug. 23 at an awards event at the InterContinental Buckhead Atlanta. Here’s a Q&A with David Abney, chairman and CEO of United Parcel Service Inc., recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Q: Please tell us what leadership and being a leader means to you.

A: The biggest thing I look for in a leader is how they carry themselves – in good times and in bad times; when they’re speaking to a large audience, and when no one is watching. A true leader is the person who has a set of standards that they hold themselves more accountable to than anyone else would.

UPS unpacks big data to deliver insight – CIO Dive

A parcel without an address is just a box, and big data without insight is just used petabytes in a cloud.

Data is largely considered an invaluable asset but if mishandled, it’s just more junk in the drawer. To unlock data’s potential, it needs effective guidance coupled with tools and direction from a qualified workforce.

The United Parcel Service (UPS) has been creating predictive and prescriptive tools for more than a decade, Jack Levis, senior director of Process Management at UPS, told CIO Dive in an email. As early as 2003, the shipping company launched Package Flow Technologies, which included predictive models, planning, execution and descriptive analysis tools, he said.

About 10 years later, in 2013 On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation (ORION) was deployed and added “proprietary advanced optimization to better plan and execute drivers’ routes,” he said. ORION used the same data foundation of Package Flow Technologies.
