The Union is just a distributor of the Health Plan. UPS is still paying for it under the CBA. The reason the union is taking over the plan is so UPS can shift the liability from long term to short term. It's just like the rest of the things UPS does...play with the numbers to make things work. UPS plays Moneyball better than Billy Beane.

This is technically incorrect. UPS pays a set amount per hour to the union for our health and welfare benefits. It is up to the Union to find a healthcare plan with premiums at or below what UPS is paying them. The union may add co-pays and deductibles in order to keep their healthcare costs down. If the union is unable to find a healthcare plan with premiums less than or equal to what UPS is paying them it must either make up the difference or pass it along to their members.

Very well said, specially the last part.

It all just comes down to it was bound to happen over time.
It is what it is and regardless of what everyone votes its going to go through.

Might as well make the best out of it while we have it for a few years, its sure to change.

Now another question. How long until a certain percentage of this money finds its way into certain political campaigns?

How many fulltime drivers work only 40 hours???? Answer 0...That would solve the pension , healthcare , and over 9.5. real friend*%..fast!!!!!!!!

There are at least 3 drivers (myself included) in my center who have guarantee pay in their checks.

So the union gets $x to pay for UPS Teamsters health insurance. Union shops it around and finds insurance company willing to cover at a cost of y=x-8%. What would you like to see the union do with the savings? If the ACA works as planned and insurance costs go down creating an even larger savings would you want it going to political campaigns to further union expansion, to direct union campaigning, or refunded to the union membership? Unions are exempt from the tax on Cadillac plans, but I am not certain can they enroll in the exchanges? If so, that would I think drive costs lower. The government now has a very real stake in making this work.

Our BA did mention the exchanges in our meeting last week but that was in regard to retiree insurance only.

Contributions going to the union is for Health, Welfare & Pension. If there was any savings with insurance costs decreasing, the balance would most likely be allocated to pensions. Pretty sure any contributions to political campaigns would not be legal.
