No renegotiation coming.

During a Q&A session, John McDevitt was asked whether UPS was asking the Teamsters for consessions due to the bad economy.

He said no, and explained the many reasons why that was not going to happen.

Can you elaborate on some the of many reasons why? Just wondering...

Concessions are seen as something that companies in poor cash positions would make. Whereas UPS is well capitalized and financed.

Concessions generally come at the expense of the quality of work that the employees perform and have potential to cause long-term harm to employee retention and morale. Not something that a short-sighted cash strapped company really cares about. Think about it, if you had money taken away from your pay, what would your response be?

Concessions are not one sided. Several recent concessions with union groups come with promises of new jobs down the road, promises that there will be additional increases when the situation turns around, or exchange of company stock for the concessions in the case of YRC.

A company that does not ask for concessions retains the best quality employees who respect the company and continue to work as hard as possible. They also have a stronger bargaining position the next time that the contract comes up for renewal. They've shown they are committed to upholding the current contract dates no matter the economic environment.

BrownSuit answered some. Here are other things McDevitt said.

First, a company has to be in very bad shape to ask for concessions. We are hurting, but not in dire straights.

Asking for concessions is renegotiating a contract. We don't really want to open up contract negotiations all over again and all of the distractions it brings.

Often when a company asks a union for concessions, the union gets some company shares. Needed or necessary in this case.

There were a couple of other reasons mentioned that I don't remember right now.
