Well most funerals cost thousands and Social Security only pays a couple of hundred as death benefit.

Isn't somebody else supposed to pay the rest?

Back in the day, people without means took life insurance very seriously. Agents would go directly to the home weekly or monthly to collect. Folks would do without to make sure that payment was made.

Perhaps death was a big part of living back then vs now? People died suddenly and often unlike today.
