Driver hiring process

I have a question concerning the permanent driver hiring process. If there are, let's say, two permanent driver openings where I work, would they have to post it on the website so that everyone can apply for it or would it be presented to the inside people (package handlers and such) first so they can apply and if nobody wants the driver jobs then post it to the public?

'Inside people' first. Then to the public and current part-time supervisors. There is a ratio of 6 inside:1 'public/PT supe' to be followed.

Okay but do they have to post it on their website that they have openings even if they are planning on hiring their "inside people" ?

My best guess is the permanent openings will not be posted for the public, until the '6' part of the ratio has been satisfied. And when the 'outside' turn comes up, if there is a PT supe they want as a driver (as training for promotion to FT mngmnt), the opening still might not be posted for the public.

PT supes? So wait a non union employee has a leg up over the package handlers?
No. The package handlers have 6 legs up on the non union employees (supes).
Article 22, Section 4.
Part-time employees shall be given the opportunity to fill full-time
jobs before hiring from the outside on a six-for-one basis (six (6)
part-time to every one (1) outside hire).
  • part-time employees means Teamster union members (or eligible to be members in 'right to work' states)
  • non union employees such as PT supes, specialists, and employees who are in a different union (such as IAM) would be considered outside hires

If I wanted to be a driver helper next peak season, what's the best way to go about doing it? I'm not a preloader so I don't know any package drivers

Talk to HR or your direct sup. Tell them you are interested. Go to the office and find am OMS or higher. Talk to them.
