Wow wkmac, This post hits me close to home. I am a proud father of two Eagle Scouts and have spent the last ten years or so as a Scout Leader. I used to spend at least one night a week at meetings, one weekend a month taking the kids on outings, and one of my vacation weeks at a Scout Reservation for Summer Camp. This was a true tragedy that killed these four young kids in Iowa. These boys were at a Council level Junior Leader Training, or what we call "Greenbar". They weren't at Summer Camp having fun or earning Merit Badges. They were being taught Leadership skills, which is the most important thing that the scouting program teaches. There will be stories of heroism coming out of this tragedy. When this tornado was over, these kids didn't panic. They performed as they were taught. They provided First Aid for the victims and started clearing the roads so that rescue workers could get to them. The four kids killed were taking shelter and lost their lives when the tornado made a direct hit on the building they were in and they were crushed under the fireplace being destroyed. I am a volunteer "Project COPE" Program Director for the Atlanta Area Council, and l work at both of our Council Camps, mainly at the Robert Woodruff Scout Reservation in Blairsville. We plan for emergencies like this, but we pray they never happen. We had a tornado damage one of our camps a couple of years ago,(Bert Adams Scout Reservation) but luckily no one was injured. My heart goes out to the families of these boys, they had their lives ahead of them and they will be greatly missed by those that knew them, especially their fathers.
