Feels soo good to say NO!

I just got off of work an hour or two ago. I will most likely not be doing this again next year.

We ran all three belts at my center, but only one side of each. I alone worked on one of the belts and the other belts were stocked full. I loaded four cars. It was pretty difficult I will admit. I was constantly being told not to stack, and make sure everything was in stop to stop order. I was also told to stop running X_x

Most of my four hours of work was just sitting around waiting for the airs to arrive. Most people enjoy this, but I would have rathered work all day with optimium carries in the belt than the hour without.

One of the full time sups passed and asked the p\t if I needed some help. He told him no.

Yea, then when you load the car and your packages go past you down the belt then you get yelled at again anyways. Theres no winning with them. Work at a decent pace, dont be late or call out too much and for ethics reasons try to not missload.

Oh I know what you went threw, tried to warn people about it for a few weeks. To the drivers here, sure your job will be easier then a normal work day, but they really dump it on us on these sign up days.

You're in the same boat along many others. I would even suggest some people discuss this with other workers to tell them how bad it could be. Not to burden the process, but to let them know it isnt going to as easy as one might think.

LOL! when they came around to try and get me to sign up, I said no of course, nice and calm like. But my mind was screaming HELLLLLL NOOOOOO!!!!

You know, usually when I'm asked to work a double on your shift I'm not so polite. I know how bad our preload can be and have no desire to have to deal with it.

I used to sign up for the day but found that it was straight time and no guarantee. So I'd drive 20 minutes for an hour and half of frantic pace, then sent home. no more of that for me.

Also heard that one year some folks demanded the guarantee so the center manager had them go out back and break frozen skids apart. When they said they couldn't do it because of the ice the center manager told them to pour buckets of water the frozen skids, then break them apart. The center manager has since moved up in the company.

Dillweed, if you wanted to stay, the contract says that holiday air work is air operations under Article 40 and you are a "support employee". 3 hour guarantee under article 40.

I yawned through yesterday, both in bldg and on road. 9 hours and handled maybe 1/10th a normal work day. Always work the holidays because it's the easiest days you'll ever have at UPS.

thanks sleeve, I thought it was the rule but asked my center manager twice last week about it and he didn't answer. Years ago another center manager promised the hours and then made us leave. We never got the back pay we filed for.

My center is like the twilight zone. When I'm in there nothing is real - nothing is as it should be nor does it make sense. When I come back out into the daylight it's like a godawful nightmare has ended and I'm so relieved to be awake and free that to go back and fight the issues would be reliving a hell I can't bear. I just put a smile on my face, go in, do the job and get out.

Glad to hear most of you had easy days. Great for a few extra bucks and still have the energy for days to come!

I don't have the seniority to work any of these days, and even if I did I wouldn't sign up for it. Being new in feeders and at the bottom on the list I am glad there are enough higher seniority drivers who can't manage their finances well enough that they feel the need to work these extra work days. Personally, any day that isn't a regularly scheduled workday will mean no work for me.

Again, generalizations are just that--generalizations--and they should be avoided like the plague.

Each situation is unique. In some cases, you are absolutely right--guys living beyond their means. Budget for 40 and the rest is gravy. In other cases, perhaps the driver is divorced, the kids are with the ex and his plans are not until later on that day. Or, as in my case, perhaps there is a major financial event coming up (my daughter's wedding) and every little bit helps. Or it very well could be that the person does not have a life outside of UPS. Whatever the case, it is not for us to judge.

I applaud your financial discipline. I had hoped to be debt free by Christmas but that has been pushed back to 6/1/11. Weddings tend to be expensive, especially traditional ones.

It's a tough job. I know you're on the sort aisle, which is madness and frankly, absurdly unsafe (if your primary is anything like the three different ones I've worked) All you can do is live in the moment, forget what time it is and hope to get out in one piece.

One day of work now is one less you're working at 65. I don't know your age, but I'm 30s and would much rather do it now.

Kind of making a lot of assumptions here aren't you?

I do have the seniority to work it and I did. I have been married to the same woman for 23 years and most of those years she has made as much as I have.

We have been debt free for years. I don't work to get even, I work to get farther ahead.

I started at 7:45 loaded until 9 and delivered about 50 stops before puching out at 4:30.

We are paid double time for the hours worked ... and no I don't mean straight time plus the holiday pay. It is double time plus the holiday pay.

My wife took our teenage daughters Christmas shopping and I got to deliver at the pace that I thought I was going to when I applied for this job years ago...

Last year, in my old building, The Friday before 4th of July (it fell on a Saturday), our full-time sup told everyone the day was optional and to come in if you want. At the time I was working small sort. It was a very small local sort with ~35 people total and 5 of us in the small sort. Well none of my other smalls sorters/baggers showed up except our p/t sup. That left just me to grab the smalls off the slide, dump them into the sorting slide, go down to the bottom slide, sort, then scan and bag everything. Fortunately, I just had to sort them into hub loads which made things easier. The sup helped for about an hour then left to go help out somewhere else. I ended up working about 4.5 hours, though, and at the time I was still within my first year so I wasn't getting the holiday pay.

I worked it, very easy money and our stewards make sure us drivers get paid double time for hours worked plus holiday pay, hard to pass up especially when one spends and party`s like I do! ( Darn casino, no wonder I only go to play slots once a year or less!) :happy-very:

I clocked in at 6:30am on Friday.

Wish every day was as easy...

I only worked 2 hours, and loaded 5 trucks. The packages came at an extremely slow pace that I'm not accustomed to.

I don't know what was going on that day. Towards the end I had 10 trucks. (just to put into perspective how slow it was)

Only filled the trucks 20-30 percent full...

I go in tomorrow at 1:45am and I'm so excited about that. Can't wait til my start time gradually decreases to midnight....NOT

I want to drive!

Hope UPS Nation had a good Thanksgiving.

Enjoy the day of football until the work week starts up again.
