I bought a new car that is better on gas coincidentally just before the big jump in price (before it went to $4+ per gallon). The money I save in gas alone nearly pays for the car payment as opposed to what I used to drive. I went from a Ford Explorer V8 to a full optioned Ford Focus. It wasn't brand new but it was a couple years old with about 14k miles on it and the price was great so I bought it. Now that I have it, I would not go back. Yeah I need to borrow a friends truck now and then to move big items and what not, but the car is decent in the snow (traction control and other safety gizmos help) and has decent zip for a 4 banger. Sure I get made fun of for having a little car sometimes, but I don't care. I'm not the one who worries about filling their car up (well no one does anymore but at the time). Other than the scenario mentioned, having a smaller car hasn't been an issue at all, actually its been great. It's easier to park (fit in smaller spaces haha) for one, which is a big help finding a parking space at school as there is a lot of parallel parking there and lets face it, the 30mpg or better avg. I'm getting doesn't hurt whether gas is $1.74 (currently) or $4.15 (highest it went around here).
