I don't think there is any real answer to that question; I would offer up the following opinions, however - which reflect my own outlook on life. What I see is all I have to offer, as they say. Events such as the one(s) you describe are what define us as people; some would view what you describe as divine providence, while more skeptical folks would make a case for coincidence - I think both miss the point: which is what we take away from experiences, events, etc regardless of why it is that they happen. Which is to say that both of the individuals you describe had a profound impact on your life, and you are a better person for it. From the sounds of it, too, you will grow more as a person as a result of this - "how many lives have touched mine and go unrecognized by me." - it sounds as if you will be ever more aware of this now and, as moreluck pointed out, how many lives you touch as a person. On some level, I personally stop seeking meaning beyond that point because there is no explanation beyond that point; however, it is enough for me that people like this exist at all. In what occasionally seems like a supremely cynical world, what never really ceases to amaze me is the selflessness and real altruism of various people - and how the actions of certain people defy description, they are enough to force a reexamination of ones own character. It is a tragedy that two such people are no longer with us. Most people with any amount of years/experience under their belt experience losses like this, and words rarely do more than offer a passing consolation. To that end, let me end by saying: I'm sorry, and I'm sure everyone who knows you the least little bit is searching for the right words to express what lies in their heart.
