It's cut and paste day at the Browncafe!
Top Ten Reasons To Dislike Mitt Romney: 1. Drop-dead, collar-ad handsome with gracious, statesmanlike aura. Looks like every central casting's #1 choice for Commander-in-Chief. What does this have to do with being effective at the job? I looked up the dates for the collar-ad reference and the closest I can come is Arrow Shirts and it seems those ads were most popular from 1905-1931... Plus the model in those ads, Charles Beach, was the live-in companion of the artist JC Leyendecker...but I'm sure they were just friends, oh wait, they weren't.
2. Been married to ONE woman his entire life, and has been faithful to her, including through her bouts with breast cancer and MS. He has been married to the same woman, I'm not certain the leap to knowing he has been faithful is a step that can be documented. Like the little slam at Newt Gingrich there too regarding cancer and MS. I do find it entertaining that ONE is large, perhaps this is a nod his grandfather's polygamist family history in Mexico? Plus, never forget that his marriage is better than any other marriages, including yours -- just ask him. 3. No scandals or skeletons in his closet. (How boring is that?) Well in 1968 Romney caused a head-on collision at Beaulac, France. Leola Anderson was killed and several others were injured. A cover-up followed. Plus there is that whole draft dodging bit too, but perhaps that isn't considered a skeleton in today's political game. 4. Can't speak in a fake, southern, "black preacher voice" when necessary. I'm not certain what this means, but it seems a bit bigoty to me... or maybe the same folks from the collar-ad reference see Romney as being mighty-white with that reference. 5. Highly intelligent. Graduated cum laude from both Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School ...and by the way, his academic records are NOT sealed. Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School. Obama's records are not sealed now, and never have been. As an aside, when talking about sealed records, it applies to records that are normally public -- school records are not in that category. Romney was in the top 5% of his business school class which is more interesting to me than graduating cum laude, but what do I know. 6. Doesn't smoke or drink alcohol, and has never done drugs, not even in the counter-culture age when he went to college. Too square for today's America? He's a Mormon, and those things go against the Mormon doctrine. Mitt may have been too busy protesting for the Vietnam War to dabble in smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol and consuming caffeinated beverages. The upside from what I can see is that he wants to share his views with the rest of us. 7. Represents an America of "yesterday", where people believed in God, went to Church, didn't screw around, worked hard, and became a SUCCESS! People I know are still going to places of worship, don't appear to be screwing around, work hard and are successful and they are younger than me... guess that isn't just a "yesterday" value. Plus, there were lots of unpleasant things in "yesterday-land" too, especially for women and non-WASP folks, but if going back in time is your gig, then by all means do it! 8. Has a family of five great sons....and none of them have police records or are in drug rehab. But of course, they were raised by a stay-at-home mom, and that "choice" deserves America 's scorn. Wouldn't it be wonderful to live in a society where women could stay at home to raise their children? Of course we all know women don't make the same money as men when they work and it usually takes more than one salary to pay the bills. Plus, most of us aren't worth roughly $250-million dollars so the stay-at-home option is less available. The scorn is not from staying at home, but not acknowledging how fortunate they are to have had that option. Last time I checked, the Obama girls also don't have police records and aren't in rehab... 9. Oh yes.....he's a MORMON. We need to be very afraid of that very strange religion that teaches its members to be clean-living, patriotic, fiscally conservative, charitable, self-reliant, and honest. Feel free to be whatever religion you want to be, just don't allow the Mormon church (or any other group) to overrule the Constitution and a variety of court rulings while you are doing it. Lots of comparative religion courses through my educational career -- and yes, I am still afraid of rulers -- so we can certainly chat about those aspects too. Here are a few things to look up to get you started on Mormonism: floating, underwear, heavenly father, Kolob, the plan and if you prefer your education to be somewhat fictionalized and based-in-truth try the HBO Big Love series, and there is so much more too. I guess that's because he made that money HIMSELF.....as opposed to marrying it or inheriting it from Dad. Apparently, he didn't understand that actually working at a job and earning your own money made you un-relatable to Americans. My goodness, it's a strange world, isn't it? Except for the part where he DID inherit his money from his father...
