Monday off, UPS forgot.

10 or so years ago, I came in about 4:30 on an early route, went to park and a truck was in my spot, I went to move it to find it was bulked front to back. No one had a clue when I found a supervisor. As far as I know, no one was disciplined. A missed scan now gets us a warning letter as drivers.

Not quite the same thing but your story reminded of when I was on vacation waaay back in the summer of '94. I got a call bright and early on Wednesday morning from my center manager who was on "vacation" as well. He asked me if I could do him a favor and come in and run one of the heavier downtown routes. center manager told me he would have the late pickups pulled off as well as taking off one of the heavy security government buildings. I was only 3 years in and still trying to be Mr. UPS and a team player so I agreed.

I knew it was a mistake before I even left the building. Whole route was in, no one was covering any pickups, and there was a room to room two building split from the next route over just thrown down the center of the car!

I thought to myself its OK. I'll only take 10 minutes to grab a sandwich for lunch and if I crank it out all day I can get it done by 5:00 and not have any missed pieces or pickups.

So at 4:55 I back into the loading dock at the last pickup quite pleased with myself as I had blasted the route out and ended up with what was probably a 10.5 hour planned day. Being a bonus driver it would be a nice little check for a day's work. I was a little bent about being taken advantage of but the day was just about over and I still had the rest of my vacation to enjoy.....or so I thought.

Sitting on the p/u book was a note that said call your office.

"Hello?"

"You left me a message to call you."

"Need you to go help Washington when you are done."

"You're kidding right?"

"No, you need to take 40 stops from him."

"Is this a joke? I'm on vacation this week! Gilbert asked me to do him a favor and come in and run this today."

"Gilbert is being transferred this week. He is no longer center manager."

"Well I'm not helping Washington. I had a split from Brown on here too and as soon as the bookstore closes out I'm heading back."

"I'm instructing you to help Washington."

"I'm supposed to be on VACATION!"

"That has nothing to do with me. You either help Washington or leave your ID on my desk when you punch out."

"EXCUSE ME?"

"You are refusing to work as directed. That is grounds for termination."

"You can't expect me to do that. I won't make the air trai..."

"I SAID I AM INSTRUCTING YOU TO HELP WASHINGTON!"

I didn't say anything for about 30 seconds. I felt so violated and disrespected. I regained my composure and said "OK, fine. You win." and hung up the phone.

I finished the bookstore p/u then took the other 50 minutes of my lunch and my 10 minute break and after driving around "looking" for Washington for a while found him at about 7:00. I took 40 stops from him, managed to get them all delivered and returned to UPS at about 11:00 pm with a package car that had almost 300 ground pickups and 50 air pickups on it.

I talked to no one, punched out, and went home.

The following Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday I was "sick" and called in.

Walking into the offices Thursday morning to give them my doctor's note (pays off to be nice to customers....) the onroad supe says "You are going to pay for your crimes!"

I just smile, hand him my doctor's note and say "I was just working as directed."

The whole incident really opened my eyes to the "real" UPS. There have been a few really decent CMs and onroads over the years but they all have left UPS.

I did end up having to pay for my crimes....it took a few years but UPS did me one even dirtier then this......but that's a tale for another time.

I would return the call when I had time. I do not believe in equivalent retaliation, for the most part anyway.

What amazes me is, we get written up for not using 3 points of contact, following distance, space cushion, hazards, and on and on. We have to follow a long list of methods 100's of times a day or risk getting a warning letter.

But, management can't seem to get the line up right for 70 trips right for 1 week. At least once a week there is a scramble because someone forgot that Joe Six pack was scheduled off. Don't even get me started on call tags. On my trip alone at least once a week I either do not have the call tag that is in EDD or I have a call tag for the section that is not on my route on that day.

I have to bat a 1.000 but management bats about .100.

Depending on the quality of your relationship with your management team one could call back in a reasonable amount of time. If you're scheduled off then stick to your guns and don't go in, but call. The reason I say this is if you burn the bridge then when you call to get a day off or another favor they might wait until the end of the day on you also. One trick is to have a spouse call back. They can get the info and tell of your inability to come in without the pressure from mgmt.

Be be careful with the "I've been drinking" excuse. Use it and a hardass center manager will have someone waiting to talk to you about your perceived alcoholism as he pulls you from service until YOU can prove your ok. I've seen it happen. Once in pkg and twice in feeder.

Yesterday at I got a phone call at 130am asking me to come in early. Ok, $100 is enough motivation. But when I got to work I informed the new specialist that called to do so at a reasonable hour as he was lucky I caught it on first ring rather than it wake my wife who would have ripped him a new one up to his ears.

On the flip side of that coin, I got a call while on vaca, to cover an air route, & told them I already had 2 beers
(really hadn't). Supe said "don't stop now, have 1 for me".

And mt wife's the same way, she scares the **** out of me sometimes.

It's more the "I'm three beers in" on a weds scheduled off day at 9am that'll raise a flag to the wrong person.

Way back in the day I had a "tough guy" sup call on a day that I had called in earlier sick because " he had to have me come in, short handed, blah blah". My wife replied that I had called in sick and was unavailable. The sup made the mistake of changing the "tone of his voice" when he reiterated his demands to which she cut him off with " Who the friend do you think you're talking to?" and it only got worse from there. When I got back to work the sup gave an envelope addressed to my wife with a handwritten apology in it.

If I go to a dr's appointment & I have any injury or bruise, the dr asks if I feel safe at home!

Taking an optional holiday today .
Do not know if they have the Customer Counter covered , so I suspect the calls to be coming starting just after noon when someone notices I'm not there .
So sorry , but I have this doctor to go see to today . He is the replacement for my GI doctor , and I really need to see him to get a new prescription .

They want us to submit a form to the FT sup requesting an option day off - REALLY?! It's my option on when to take an option day, not theirs.

I always call in on my cell so I can prove I called and don't get bitten with a NCNS. Sad that is comes down to that.

"another favor"...."your relationship with management"..."have my spouse call in"...are you friend'ing serious? That is disgusting!
As for a "hardass center manager" talking to me about my perceived alcoholism and pulling me from service...go for it..and drug test me everyday on the clock...if not it's back pay! People really need to stop begging for the crumbs these fools throw at Them..and know your rights and DEMAND them every day! If the hard ass wanted too, whats stopping him from saying,"I smelled alcohol on your breath this morning..do you have a problem.....SUCKING his JOHNSON aint gonna stop that kinda behavior from a SNAKE in the GRASS! It will just leave a nasty taste in your mouth!

Technically, I thought management wasn't allowed to call people who are not there when it's start time. I remember when I first started that they would have a fellow pre-loader call to see if you were on your way or coming in.

It's not managements job to see if your coming in. You're considered a no call no show which goes on your record.

As I said, if you get a hard ass and every time they get a hold of you they hear " can't, I'm drinking", etc, they can play that card. I've seen it happen. I've spoken to a steward that had to defend a guy when he showed up who said " I wish those guys would quit saying that".

Mgmt at UPS can and will friend with people on any number of reasons. We read about them here every day. What makes you think what I said is so impossible? Or were you just tossing out your tough guy attitude?

It must suck going through life with so much animosity and carrying those heavy chips on your shoulders.

I think someone wrote that they don't go through life retaliating for every sideways look or mutter someone made under their breath. Maybe we should start a forum for all the "Tough Guys" to show how crude and tough they can pretend to be.

Maybe some people go through life without expecting favors from these people...you don't cozy up to a snake...sorry if you percieve that as tough guy attitude.....you may wake up one day and realize you are only any good to this company as long as you have a strong back and weak mind
