Moving to management

I’m a late 30 something former cop (hated job) that just took a job at UPS as a package loader on the midnight shift. I have a college degree and and a good resume. I was pulled aside by HR to give it 6 weeks and I’d be on my way to management etc (HR said even the CEO) started as a package handler. I have job now, but want my foot in the door with a company like UPS. HR also told me to
Stick it out for “6weeks”. Was HR blowing smoke? Or will my prior Police experience and other career accomplishments really get me to where I would like to be.
Thanks

I’m really serious about this. I’ve had a string of bad luck. I have 4 kids and really want to hope and pray this move works. Please honest answers would be appreciated.

Do not do it. Chances of moving up high in management aren’t good. Nobody will like you. Long hours for a good salary but when you look how many hours you’re working it’s not that great. If you want to stay with the company wait to become a driver.

Do not take the job? Or do not go management? I’m awaiting my start date

So you’ve got a degree, good resume, body is fine, decent current job (?) and you’re late 30s. With 4 kids........

If I were you, knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t give UPS a second though for any position. Folks get caught up in the PR spin and past reputation and HR sucks them right in with unrealistic expectations.

Don’t do it unless you have to. But if you do have to, given your circumstances, you should probably go management with an eye toward getting out and on to something better if you’re not promoted above PT sup fairly quickly. Given all the positives you’ve already got going on, you shouldn’t be thinking about giving your next 20-30 years to UPS.

I would think a former police officer with a degree could easily get a job in theft prevention here.
Your resume and job experience is too good to be stuck supervising packages.
UPS loves management personnel who have military/police background. They don't think, they follow orders.

Just having the degree would increase your chances of moving up in the company quickly.
Good luck.

You'll definitely get to part time supe first. They offer that job to just about everyone once you get a little hub experience. From there it takes a little patience before you get a full time opportunity. It may take years, but your degree and law enforcement experience will be a plus, so you'll be ahead of some other part time supes.

They are cutting jobs in lp or making them into part time jobs.... the OP could go out and find something else outside of ups and make more money....

Awesome advice and yes HR did say loss prevention and high value package escorts/delivery. I am a licensed insurance agent now, however straight 100% commission sales is a tough life. Not knowing if your getting paid one week to the next.

What exactly does a part time Sup do? And what is the wage? Waiting around years Would not be desirable. I am willing to wait, but years?

Wage is negotiated so it all depends on your experience. They offered $17/hr to someone I know. He works 30 hours per week and during peak they basically own his :censored2: doing about 55 to 60 hrs per week. From what I've seen getting promoted to full time management takes a lot of commitment. I know one person that made it but she had to work 5 years part time supe in multiple areas before they finally made her full time.

Did you get to keep at least one uniform? And maybe a set of cuffs...

If you go for it try to get in loss prevention. After being there 35 years I can’t honestly recommend a job at Ups. Back in the day 20 plus years ago I would it was a different place. I would not want anyone in my family to go through what I’ve gone through. I wish you the best hopefully you are a decent person try to stay that way it won’t be easy

My advice. I left the military after a couple enlistments in the military police and as the supervisor of the investigations section. I was recruited at college and showed up in a suit and tie with a resume. The other applicants were in everything from jeans to sweat suits. I was offered a nice salary and a job in loss prevention and turned it down saying I was in school now and out of LE> Well...29 years later, I'm still at UPS. I turn 55 next year and my union pension is :censored2:. If I had taken the job, Id be gone next year at probably around $65K but no, I have another 11 or so to hopefully get $3500 a month until the union is booted and then get gubment scraps. Good luck, and talk to all the FT management you can about it.

Been there done that. The management environment seems to depend on the center you're in.
