Norfolk Southern: Will Be Primary Eastern Rail Carrier For FedEx - Wall Street Journal
Norfolk Southern Corp. (NSC) said Tuesday it has been selected as FedEx Corp.'s (FDX) primary eastern rail carrier for its revamped freight shipping operation.
FedEx said in September it would restructure its domestic trucking unit, combining its FedEx Freight and FedEx National less-than-truckload operations beginning Jan. 30.
United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS) said Tuesday that it has used rail service for decades, with all of its ground service packages traveling 750 miles or more generally moving by train.
A UPS spokesman said the company spent more than $750 million on intermodal rail service in the U.S. last year. He said UPS uses all of the major railroads and doesn't have primary providers.
