Not Paid for vacation time.

I recently had a week off and I never got paid and was told it was because I hadn't reached a year of employment yet, and that my vacation time would probably be paid out to me at the end of the year... Shouldn't I have been told ahead of time that I was not getting paid? Shouldn't I get paid for that week once I do reach a year instead of it being paid out at the end of this year?
