If I remember correctly, the people of Charlottesville voted to remove the statue of General Lee and outsiders who were never confederate soldiers became somehow convinced that they were being slighted.

I don't know why they just didn't offer to buy the statue and move it to one of their racist strongholds. Maybe @Monkey Butt 's front yard?
