I'm sorry to hear that! I lost my father several years ago and he also always sang that song. He was a history buff particularly fascinated with Native American history; so at his memorial we played this Cherokee version......

You had no way of knowing. And I was totally unprepared for the reaction. Not only was that one of her favorite songs I am part Cherokee (very little). I still miss her sooooo much.
