Refugees wait at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport in 2007 as part of the first large wave of Iraqis to be resettled in the U.S.
Carlos Osorio/AP

By 2007, the U.N.’s refugee agency called the Iraqi exodus the "largest long-term population movement in the Middle East since the displacement of Palestinians" in 1948. But at that point, the U.S. had admitted fewer than 1,000 Iraqi refugees since the start of the war.

With growing outrage at home, the U.S. began accepting Iraqis in large waves in 2008. But many advocates remain critical of a program they claim is too bureaucratic to help vulnerable refugees, such as interpreters who aided the American war effort.

“The U.S. requires people to jump through various hoops, and particularly since 9/11 those are security-related hoops,” Frelick says. “In terms of emergency response to those in immediate danger, it’s proven to be pretty slow-moving and not that effective.“

you talk out of both sides of your mouth. you claim to care about veterans yet you want to use resources that could help them elsewhere.

Oh, that's a good one. Truth be told, in very population there are a percentage of bad folks. Some of the ones who came through Ellis Island didn't turn out so well either. Ever hear of the Mafia?

Yes, there are bound to be some crazies in the Syrian mix, just like there are in any population. How many of Dubya's Iraq refugees have turned against us? Gee, who got us involved big-time over there in the first place. Wasn't that Mr. Bush (pick two)? And the 9-11 response was basically another war instead of a targeted campaign to find the bad guys. Osama was taken-out by a small Special Ops team, not an army. We never should have gone to Afghanistan either. The Russians should have taught us that lesson.

Mafia ?
Didn't they just offer to help protect NYC against terrorists ?
The code of the Mafia was a whole lot better than what we have today .
If you owed them , they took it out on you.
Today's crooks not only take it on you but they also take out your whole family .

Who was it that really screwed up the Middle East ? Not a Bush .
President Jimmy Carter ( D ) .
His failure to support the shah , made the Middle East into the powder keg it is today .

SWEDEN LOSES 14,000 Refugees Slated For Deportation: “We simply do not know where they are”

The National Border Police Section reports that of the 21,748 individuals due to be sent home after their asylum applications were turned down, a whopping 14,140 have simply vanished off the police radar. Around a third, or the remaining 7,608, still live and are accounted for in the Swedish Migration Board’s premises or have indicated an address for their own homes. It is not clear if anyone has actually tried following up on said home address to see how many have simply made one up.
The local cops is brutally honest: “We simply do not know where they are”, said Patrik Engstrom, a spokesman for the local police .
