Some because of the meaning of the word anti, believe the AntiChrist, is sin personified. That whoever and whatever is against (anti) the teachings of Christ, is the AntiChrist. I can see some of that reasoning. The antichrist were not only run of the mill people during John's day, they were already sowing the seeds of apostasy in the church. Bedtime, so I'll make it quick... There was a falling away for sure... The voice of the Pope is supposed to be the voice of the Lord, Himself. The Pope seats himself in what is claimed to be the temple of God, and he asserts himself to be the voice of God. So he supposedly expresses the very thoughts of God. Talk about blasphemy. But, what would you expect from the Anti-Christ! I believe the first pope and his line of successors are Paul's "Man of Sin,"and that his temple is the church, and that the apostasy which made it possible for him to appear is the disposition to leave/go against Jesus, His apostles, and their words ( Scripture) and embrace the doctrines and traditions of men. Another passage of the apostasy...."who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth." -1 Tim.4:3
