A local church that I am a member of has a Church Constitution that contains the following section on Membership: The membership of the church shall consist of persons who have fulfilled the following requirements: 1. Acceptance of Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior and baptism by immersion (sprinkling or pouring is permitted in cases of physical disability) 2. Provide a public profession of faith before the church 3. Completion of church membership class 4. Agree to submit to the teaching of Scripture as expressed in the church’s doctrinal statement (“What We Believe”) and constitution. 5. Have a Hebrews 13:17 attitude towards church leadership 6. Commitment to a biblical lifestyle that brings honor to Jesus Christ 7. Faithfulness in church life: Consistently attend worship services (exceptions will be made for college students, military personnel, the physically challenged and their caregivers) Commitment to serve in a ministry of the church Financially support the church (as able) Attend members’ meetings and vote either in person or by absentee ballot An individual shall be received into the church by recommendation of the Elders and by majority vote of the membership at a church meeting. Following approval by the church membership, the right hand of fellowship will be extended by the elders in a worship service or members’ meeting. The church membership roll is maintained by the Church Clerk. At every annual members’ meeting, the Church Clerk must read aloud members added, transferred, called home to be with the Lord, and removed before the congregation. I became a member when this church was a local independent Baptist Church. Do you think I should remove myself from membership if I don’t agree with each item in the above section? I don’t.
