Scheduling newbie drivers on ghost routes

Every Monday morning me and other low seniority drivers are assigned to routes that are rarely if ever active outside of peak.

So we come in, and unless there is a call-in, we get sent back home.

I asked the supe why that is.....he replies it is a management ploy to not show our cards.

He wants us there just in case we are needed!

My questions. I show up, don't work, waste gas going back home. Shouldn't I get on-call pay?
Why can't they just not schedule me, and call me in if needed?

You should be able to demand an 8 hour day starting from the time you were told to come in. That is how it works here. If they have a cover come in and they cut a trip, he is given 8 hours of sweeping floors, emptying trash cans, driving around missloads for the day.

Or you can ask another driver if you can run their route for the day. There's always someone willing to take a day off.
