Hate to break it to you, but you were lied to. There is no such thing as being hired FT off the street. There is such a thing as being hired as a seasonal employee, and if they like you they might keep you. They don't hand out FT jobs to people off the street. No one is hired FT off the street. You have an opportunity, to eventually be a FT employee. That is all you have.

And you did not answer the question when I asked if you were PT to FT or off the street, so I am just going to guess off the street. Good luck to you
They do here, 1 out of 7 FT openings is an off the street hire, pure rookie. They jump ahead of all the vacation cover drivers waiting to go FT.

In that respect it sucks for the guy who's been covering routes for the past 4 years or so and has a part time classification and is waiting for that FT job.

I stated I was hired as full time off the street. I would believe you if I didn't know someone personally who was hired off the street full time and is still there. I'm not sure if it's different for different regions, but that's what I was told. according to the contract here, if a person is hired as a seasonal, they have to be specifically told that and must sign forms stating the employee is seasonal.

You're not understanding the meaning of off the street. Yes, drivers are hired off the street and become permanent if they like you. No one is handed a FT driver job off the street Day 1. You work as a seasonal employee thru Xmas. You get laid off for a period of time. If they have a spot they call you back. That is a FT off the street hire. Off the street does not mean permanent from day 1. It means they liked you and brought you back after peak. Off the street means you never were a PT employee.

obviously you know more than I do. I was clearly stating what I was told. I have documentation That says full time permanent non seasonal. must complete 30 day probationary period. eligible for benefits 8 weeks after gaining seniority. why wouldn't they just state seasonal and avoid the BS? why do they have Sups running routes?

HERE, we recently hired THREE Full Time permanent Feeder Drivers off the street. Full Time permanent from day one.
I work in a building with 200 package car drivers and NONE wanted to go to Feeders.
It boggles my mind.... Starting at UPS as a FT Feeder driver!

You are guaranteed 8 hours per day. Why are you sitting at home? Show up tomorrow and demand your 8 hours. Ask the sup where the broom closet is, if they don't need you to drive.

The only way someone is getting feeders here is by having a personal friendship with a hit man.

This is all very confusing. I was never Laid off. I worked 39 days out on the road as a driver, I was then told by the center manager "you made it" go home and he would call me when my union paperwork was processed. I have gotten text messages from my direct supervisor weekly telling me hang on not yet. I am really not sure whats going on. It all seems like a game, but its really not fair to play games with peoples finances.

I will take you advise and attempt to reach my local union for more info. If I call corporate could they advise of my status? Seasonal /Permanent/ Active?

Are you in one of those locals where you have to work 40 days? I couldn't help but notice that you said you only worked 39 days. Like others have told you, I would contact the union local and explain things to them to see if they could light a fire under someone's ass at UPS.

Good luck to you!

Unless things have changed, I believe you can get hired full time off the street. I've never heard of a feeder driver getting hired off the street, but I know package drivers have been hired off the street.

LOL! I"ve never heard of a local with a 40 day probation, BUT THAT WOULD MAKE A LOT OF SENSE!!! That's exactly the kind of thing they do to virtually everyone. Lay you off before they have to keep you, or a pay increase result. But that would mean, he hasn't made it yet.
I would advise him not to make a fuss, till he knows what his status is. Why hasn't he spoken to the local? If he made it, then the company could owe him a lot of back pay, which the local will possibly agree to no back pay.
Find out EXACTLY what your status is, by speaking to:
1. Union local.
2. Human resources.
3. Casual talk with (if possible) with a driver who "really" knows how things work. This guy is difficult to find, because all drivers pretend to know what's up to the new rookie. And some of the drivers who do know what's up, don't talk much to other drivers. He's often in a small circle.

Then when you know where you stand - act on your options. If you have any.

I have to be honest, this seems like an underhanded way to either get rid of you or string you along until peak starts when the free period begins. I don't understand why they would be stringing you along this far into it as most, (not always, but most) of the time making it that far into qualifying, you would have made book.

Something isn't right and I would immediately get on the horn and call your local to find out what is going on.

I'm not saying someone can't "eventually" gain a FT position off the street. We all know that happens.

I have never heard of someone being handed a FT position off the street on Day 1.

And on the off chance he did get handed the job from Day 1, why is the OP sitting at home allowing them to say don't come in. You're FT. Show up and demand your 8 hours
