In the beginning of this forum anyone could post without registering. That worked fine for a while and then porn and spam started showing up and I got to spend lots of time every day deleting posts. It eventually got to the point that there was more trash than real posts. Then for a couple of years I switched to requiring everyone to register before posting. Using that system new users still registered a couple of times a week to post spam and porn but it making them register really did slow them down. A couple of years ago I found an anti spam hack for this forum's software which puts all newbies and unregistered posters into the moderation queue and that pretty much put a stop to the porn and spam. I admin a bunch of websites, a few of which are based on forums. In my experience forums without a system for enforcing community guidelines eventually get shut down. In fact I was contacted yesterday by the admin of a long established "free speech" forum which was recently shut down due to excessive troll activity. They are reworking their forum and she was interested in the guidelines and structure used on another of the forums I admin. The forum she wants to use as a template is actually much more restrictive than the moderation that we use here...
