Sleep medication for drivers

Are there any medications that I can take as a sleep aid that won't cause me to fail my dot exam. I called up there and they said Klonopin and Ambien are both no-go's. It doesn't really make since to me since the side effects are gone after 8 hours even if there are traces of it in your system.

And I've tried other alternatives, OTC stuff like diphenhydramine, melatonin, etc. I can't sleep without my sleep aids. Not even for a few hours.

That Ambien is nothing to mess with. People have gotten up the next morning and drove to work and then forget how they got there. It's spooky stuff.

yes i agree. but i don't agree that .5mb klonopin will have any effect on my driving ability 8 hours later. I understand if I was on it for anxiety and taking it during the day but I'm not. It is a sleep aid. It's like saying a driver can't drink alcohol while working. Well that's obvious. But if he gets drunk after work and comes in the next day, he is fine to drive.

And I can promise you, you would rather have me driving after a good nights sleep on .5mb klonopin than driving in a zombified sleep deprived state not having slept but maybe 1-2 hours a night for the past week. Well, that's what will happen. I quit taking the klonopin and have 6 hours sleep in 3 days. Nodding off behind the wheel of my personal vehicle.

ambien has a half-life of 2-3 hours. If they slept for 8 hours and drove to work the next morning and forgot how they got there, it has nothing to do with ambien. What they did during that 8 hours while the ambien was in them is a different story.

"I can't sleep without my sleep aids" is a alarming statement in and of itself. Sleep aids are meant to be used on a temporary basis and if you need them on a daily basis I think you may need to see a specialist.

I have found that if I am having trouble falling asleep I start counting backwards from 41,000.

Okay, you tried melatonin. Did you ever try the liquid melatonin? It has advantages over the tablet form, such as not having to be broken down and thus can get into your system faster.

I have no trouble sleeping. Take a brisk one mile walk before bed, lay off alcohol if you use which acts like a stimulant in some people. Hot chocloate, warm bath.
