Your correct rate should be $9.85/hr UNSKILLED. August 1st you should get a $.35/hr raise.

If you are working a skilled job, you should also recieve $1/hr more.

It appears as though UPS overpaid you for awhile @ $10.20/hr, but now you are being underpaid due to not getting the extra $1 an hourl.

Talk to a steward and notify your center manager.

Sleeve_meet_Heart is correct. This should be how things worked before you became pickoff.

According to the contract: “….Part-time employees still in progression on the effective date of this Master Agreement August 1, 2008, shall receive the above contractual increases and will be paid no less than what they are entitled to in accordance with the wage schedules in Article 22, Section 5. blah, blah ,blah….”

So, he starts on 6/15/08, so pay = 8.50
06/15/2008 - 06/21/2008
CURRENT PAY RATE 8.50
He obtains seniority 30 working days later on 7/27, and luckily the new contract (economic part) goes into effect that same week on 8/1/08 so he gets the 1st of the twice yearly split raise of 35 cents: 8.50 + .35 = $8.85
07/27/2008 - 08/02/2008
CURRENT PAY RATE 8.85
On 9/15 he has worked 90 days and under the new contract he gets 1$. Since the contract states “will be paid no less than what they are entitled to” he doesn’t get more that 1$, he just gets 65 cents to bring him up to 1$. So, 8.85 +.65 = 9.50
09/14/2008 - 09/20/2008
CURRENT PAY RATE 9.50
Yea vacation!

it’s the first week of Feb. He now gets the 2nd split raise of 35 cents. So, his pay should be 9.50 + .35 = 9.85. Notice he got .70 = 10.20. Someone goofed. They figured out their goof on the week of 6/7 and fixed it back to 9.85.
02/01/2009 - 02/07/2009
CURRENT PAY RATE 10.20
His next raise is Aug 09 and he gets .35. This should correctly bring him back to 10.20.
06/07/2009 - 06/13/2009
CURRENT PAY RATE 9.85

If pickoff is considered skilled (don’t know), then you add a dollar per hour from that week on.

Now the trouble comes where UPS technically should try to get back the monies they overpaid. Then again, this employee working skilled labor should recieve the extra dollar for whenever he /she started, so it might be a wash or still in the employees favor.

Still best to straighten it out and either pay back what YOU owe or get paid retro what they owe.

and PS welcome to BC tramtwo!

thanks for the welcome.

I have no problem paying back the monies.... I'm there mostly ONLY for the health benifits and potential oppertunities WAY down the road.

I was told by most of the guyz that they recieved rasies at a year.... so I am still confused.

I am sure that the position is not classed as skilled, should be, maybe. Its a sort of sorting. ;)

Ok thanks for the detailed answers.

Question, is there no rasie at one year?

You will get a $.35 raise August 1st, which will largely be your 1 year. With the skilled pay, your payrate should be paid $11.20 per hour beyond Aug 1 2009.

The newly hired part-timers that fall under the new contract, making seniority after August 1st 2008, will be paid $10/hr, $11/hr after 1 year with skilled pay. So then you should be silghtly ahead of them.

This is all pretty confusing sometimes so if I"m wrong someone please correct me!

I was hired BEFORE the start of the newest contract. (HR MADE A BIG DEAL ABOUT HOW LUCKY I WAS) I am also pretty sure that they will NOT call what I do (pickoff) skilled. The hub manger just recently introduced me to an audertor as "a loader that is just picking off today" there has been a lot of todays over the past two months. ;)

Those guys were probably there for a year or more and they were under the old contract. When I started I also got a raise (50 cent) a year after my start date. But now I’m under the new contract and get a split raise every 6 months. Depending on the month they started, those guys should now see they are just getting two split raises a year, Aug and Feb., and none on their annual start date ( unless it’s Aug or Feb).

The only group of people that should getting 50 cent raises per year now are the part-time employees who were hired or reached seniority after August 1, 2008.

Yes, you were lucky. You made seniority just a few days before Aug 1.2008. If it was a few days later the below statement would apply to you.

“Newly hired part-time employees who are hired or reach seniority after August 1, 2008 will be paid according to the following wage schedules: blah, blah…” This is basically 50 cent per year for a few years then 87 cents. But they also get a $1 after 90 days. After progression they will then get the split raises.

By the way, the total raise for 2009 (Aug 09 & Feb 20010) is actually 75 cents.
In Aug 09 we should get half of that, which is 37.5 cents. We might get 37 or 38 cents rather than 37.5 cents.

It IS skilled, and in the contract. If you are a sorter you get the extra dollar, period. If you request it and they deny you, and you file a grievance, you will get the pay retroactive to the date you filed for. Then they will likely stop asking you to sort and get someone else to do a skilled job for a dollar less than what should be.

Ok should I bring this change in pay/error up with managment, HR, the union? Its obvious to me that my one year mark triggered this change.

As far as the dollar an hr more for the skilled position, I'll nose around and report back.

So someone hired after me at a year with UPS would be making $10.00

And I after a year am making $9.85 (corrected).

I appreciate all the response so far.... not sure i understand all this.

I want to say that this is not about money or fairness.... i just want to be informed. I enjoy what I do @ UPS and will continue. Besides I like out working those young guys half my age who spend all shift belly aching! :)
