Just some observations........... 1. While I think the UAW could make some concessions, ultimately I don't think that they are anywhere near the root of the problem. The "job bank" program is the first thing that should go. That being said...the auto companies are complicite in allowing it to be negotiated into the contract. The figure I hear thrown around is that 10% of the cost to manufacture a vehicle is labor costs. If that is true......getting the UAW to concede anything doesn't do much to bring down production costs. There has to be something else sucking the profits out of the cost of production. 2. I do believe that there is a concerted effort by Republicans to "bust" the unions. This has been part of doctrine, I believe, since the Reagan days. Why that is the case, for the life of me, I can't figure out. My only thought is that there is an underlying desire for a two tier society. The have and the have nots. 3. The solution (in part) to the gridlock that is our congress would be for all members of the house and senate to be limited to one (1) six year term. This would eliminate the need for reelection contributions. And restore the view that being a congressman or senator is not a career choice..... but a chance to serve their constituents and their country. 4. It is a sad time we live in when we have Communist China chastising us on our lack of fiscal restraint. Of course, they've probably earned the right since a major portion of our debt is financed by them. How did we let this happen? One word.............Greed!!!
