UPS adds dynamic routing to ORION, saving 2-4 miles per driver - Supply Chain Drive

Logistics companies have become more interested in route planning as packages pour into their networks. Volume surges have prompted them to figure out the most efficient way to get them delivered to their final destination. For UPS, it's work that is decades in the making.

UPS tested its ORION algorithm between 2003 and 2009, with pilot testing taking place in eight locations between 2010 and 2011, according to the company.

The dynamic routing upgrade that is now rolling out began to be deployed in the fall of last year, between September and October, according to Matthew O'Connor, a UPS spokesperson.

They want 90% trace compliance, I average 70% and run between 5 to 20 miles less than Orion.
Orion is an abject failure but the company defends it with a a cult like fanaticism because they can’t admit they have failed.

I found that the best way to set up a route was to go on route with the driver and get the drivers input and then work with the preload to get them to load the drivers package car as such......that way the drivers area knowledge was incorporated/built into their route ....who was I to tell a driver with 20 years on the same area and knew the seasonal restraints and all of her/his customers and was often times able to drop off their parcels at their place of work......most of my time and effort was on the preload getting their brownie loaded correctly.......

I always tell the preloaders looking to go driving: I learned more about the job those days I jumped after sort during peak. I was competent enough to use the diad myself, and when I went driving I remember they were surprised at how handy I was with it right off the bat at school. It definitely helped.

Retired 2020. Not my Problem Anymore!
Last year before I retired I loved to run ORION as close to 100% as possible especially when a supervisor was with me. It gave me extra miles and more overtime and I didn’t have to look over my shoulder for padding miles. Last time a supervisor road with me it had me crossing back and forth across a 4 lane highway, climbing over packages to get to a package in the middle of truck and later after delivering in a gated community it had me go across the road to deliver a street then back into the gated community to do 2 stops. The supervisor actually asked me why I didn’t do them when we was there before. I said I don’t think about my route I just follow ORION Like I’m told. Oh that last year was fun playing with management with their own rules. 😅

They have shut off the dynamic optimization for each driver in our building for now. I give it three months until someone wises up and takes away that capability from the local buildings.

These new supervisors are going to know where your route is unless they can see it on the computer screen
They're all 30-day wonders that never had any experience delivering packages and probably most of them still live at home with mommy and daddy..

Yes, I know I'm working late.
UPS corporate fools still think orion is the best thing since sliced bread. I've always said ups makes alot of money, but they would make alot more money if they would just listen.
Just keep throwing extra money at me, I'll take it. Can't wait for Orion 4.0.

"Climbing over packages"...???
Not a method. Not even safe.
A coworker unloaded his truck from the rear three times in the first few stops so he could select pkgs from the middle while the Orion guru was with him. The supe was not amused and chided him for it. SPOHR dropped like a rock.

Safety first Mr. Supervisor, you made and enforce the rules not us drivers. Live with it.

Crossing over a 4 lane highway, making right hand turns into traffic, reaching out of your range of motion to reach for pkgs out of sequence and climbing over pkgs are all unsafe methods but all those safe methods goes out the window when you are told to follow ORION. You either follow ORION or Work Safe. To do safe work methods 100% of the time you have to eliminate all the above examples of unsafe conditions I mentioned above and then you would have to pretty much throw ORION out completely. It is like them telling you “You are instructed to jump in that pool but don’t get wet” It is impossible to do both 100% of the time and if someone says I follow ORION as much as safe. Well then how can you be told you have to follow it 90% of the time. What if eliminating ”All” unsafe actions of ORION means you can only follow it 40% of the time that day?

It really is too bad when a person reads a story like this and knows it’s a fairy tale. The only people it saves miles on is a rookie who doesn’t know the area. Any body else it adds miles and not only that it slows you down. It could be a great tool if allowed to be but not the way it is handled now.
