UPS crash report stresses battery dangers - Business First

A report released Sunday about the 2010 crash of a United Parcel Service Inc. jumbo jet in Dubai stresses the fire dangers of transporting rechargeable lithium batteries. The fiery Boeing 747 crash in September killed two pilots flying for Atlanta-based UPS (NYSE: UPS) who tried to land at Dubai as smoke filled the cockpit.

The preliminary report by United Arab Emirates investigators states that flammable batteries “were distributed throughout the cargo decks,” and some "lithium ion battery packs" should have been singled out and handled as hazardous cargo, The Wall Street Journal reports. The information comes just days after U.S. officials approved an aviation bill that blocks adoption of proposed tough new U.S. rules regarding lithium battery shipments.
