UPS picks former Home Depot exec as its next CEO - Atlanta Business Chronicle

Former Home Depot executive Carol Tomé will be the next CEO of UPS, making her one of the highest profile female chief executives in the country.

United Parcel Service Inc. said Thursday it named Tomé as the company's CEO effective June. She will replace David Abney, the current chairman and CEO, who will transition to executive chairman of the board until Sept. 30, when William Johnson, UPS Lead Independent Director, assumed the role of non-executive chairman. Abney will remain as a special consultant through the end of 2020.

Atlanta Business Chronicle reported Tuesday on Abney's expected retirement and speculation of Tomé as his successor.

Am I wrong or do past CEO’s come from within the ranks?

If the company were to promote a female from within the ranks to CEO it could cause problems:
1) it could cause resentment by the females who thought they should be promoted and;
2) lawsuits by these females.

Considering the current crusade to railroad females to positions of authority within the company, the hiring of an outsider, regardless of her qualifications, was probably the easiest, quickest and safest way to do it.
