What do you think would happen at UPS if...?

What do you think would happen at UPS if every single UPS management person worldwide made a New Year's resolution for 2010 to make the care of each package a priority and the care of each employee a priority and started to view production as the means by which this care is measured?
I
Production as you call it,would be measured as always at ups,by what looks good on paper. In effect better production would generate the opposite of what you intend to accomplish.A driver that is not over dispatched will go the extra mile to do everything in thier power to make service on each and every package which is really, what the customer is paying for.
Have you ever noticed that some cover drivers can do any run blind and still have good numbers? How do you suppose they accomplish this? Look at the amount of send agains.Sure this driver looks good on paper, and his mngmt team also as a result, but in the end,who is paying the price?
I applaud your ideas about treating employees with respect, but in my opinion, better production=unhappy customers, and a jaded workforce.

A cared for customer combined with a cared for workforce will be productive.

It seems to me that without the package and without the employee there really would be no UPS.

What do you think?

I think I want some of the stuff that you are smoking!

So under your generalization, what would happen if Drivers quit whining about telematics and actually did their job as they were trained?

Your entire dispatch system is totally dependent upon a certain percentage of drivers taking shortcuts and working off of the clock.

If every driver nationwide took all his lunch and breaks and followed all UPS methods to the letter, there would be many tens of thousands of service failures and a lot of management people would get whacked.

Let's not forget that UPS is no longer an acronym for anything. The U doesn't stand for "United". The S doesn't stand for "Service". Heck, the P doesn't even stand for "Parcel".

This was a conscious decision made to reflect the change in direction the company has and is taking. It's a future that will have very little to do with door to door delivery.

I believe the reason no one is answering your questions is because they are based in idealistic notions that have nothing to do with the real world.

Go listen to John Lennon's "Imagine" if you want some insight to your questions.
Go listen to John Lennon`s " Imagine " and you will see it is a song about embracing Socialism! :surprised:

The Union is Socialistic. Your police force is Socialistic. Your public schools are Socialistic.

All big Companies want you to fear Socialism. It cuts into their profits and the pay of the Exec's. They convince you Socialism is a bad word your whole life. Don't fall far it.

Don't get me wrong; Capitalism rules, but Socialism is not a bad word. It holds business in check.

The Capitalistic market place is what holds prices in check.

Dear trplnkl,

My hypothetical question assumes that the resolutions will be kept.
Based upon this, would it change your answer ?

Sincerely,

I
That is the problem with "hypothetical" questions, they are rarely based on what will actually happen. Not much different than the question, " Whay would you do if you won the lottery?". Sure it could happen but the odds are overwhelmingly against it.

Of course IF this were to happen it would make most of the employees at UPS happier.

Happy now?

Capitalism is what provides the dollars that keep socialism alive.

I have been saying this for years. Check out Costco. It is their philosophy,a happy employee is a productive employee. It has been voted one of the best co. to work for.

dearest i

there was this company long ago that put the employee and customer first. the employees were not only allowed, but the company founder invited the union in to make sure the employees got the best they could.

and the focus was on service, so much so that we went way above the call of duty to get things delivered.

right before i retired, i remember a company that sent its payroll via ups. every friday morning, it would end up at our center, and every friday night, it would still be sitting there. misorted every friday, along with about 30 other nda

the company at one time would have sent it via delta dash to see to it the people got their checks

my experience with incrementalism is that it is a series of rotting downward movement to a goal that is not at all what is desired.

maybe ups can turn the tide, maybe not.

but for sure, your touchy feelly emotional posts are not going to make a difference.
