I’m not a socialized medicine proponent but in my local the company contributes over $1700 a month per driver to the fund our Healthcare Trust which 100% pays the cost of premiums for our coverage. In a Medicaid For All world I would say we would then have $1700/month on the table that should the be used to benefit us some other way, perhaps simply in higher wages to compensate for the higher taxes, perhaps in higher contributions to pension plans. The fact that our plan is 100% paid for does not make it “free”, it’s still a big part of our total compensation. The problem is that everyone is arguing about who is going to pay for what and no one is talking about the real problem which is the exorbitant cost of health care (the actual services not the cost of insurance). We pay way way way-y-y more of our GNP into healthcare than anyone else, we lead the league. All the current talk on health care seems like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. I avoid the doctor unless I am forced simply because I dread the shower of bills and paperwork that will follow any use of any medical service. It’s Jeckel and Hyde.. the care givers are generally awesome (with exceptions of course) but the business office end of any type of medical provider is a different story and the insurance company claims people may in fact, I feel, be Lucifer’s cousins. The current system is built to baffle and screw over the consumer. I think the big hospital chains, Big insurance companies (I’m looking at you Aetna!) want to keep it that way so they can keep milking this cow.
