In a second bowl, combine shortening, sugar and eggs; set aside. Blend together flour, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and salt in a large mixing bowl; blend in shortening mixture wiht flour mixture. Add applesauce mixture; stir in nuts and chocolate chips. Drop by teaspoon onto ungreased baking sheets; bake at 350F for 10 to 12 minutes. Makes 2 to 3 dozen cookies.</p><p></p><p>Works well with splenda, too. Making it safe for diabetics. Just don't include the chocolate chips. May want to make the drops a bit smaller, too!
