Yes, I see their point, classifying Al Sharpton as the same sort of opportunist as The National Review and some non-specific white supremacists. I find that Associated Press (AP) and CBS News first covered the story on January 12th. (Before the suspects were announced.) I find that Fox News covered the story on February 2nd. It must have been pretty low on their priority list, too. They did not cover it until after the suspects' identities had been revealed. I suspect that this story did not get a lot of attention - in part - because details were withheld by police. I think it was not classified as a hate crime because the victims were apparently selected for their shiny automobile. The police did not think it was a hate crime, and the DA did not think it was a hate crime. Did they get their evidence and their training from the media, is that why the media is to blame for this not being pursued as a hate crime? The AP writer from Knoxville who covered the story in January, Duncan Mansfield, last week wrote, "Web sites describe gruesome details that are not in the public record". That makes me think there might be some exaggeration in the blogs. (I have read that blogs are 110% exaggeration, and I believe it.) I find a claim that DNA evidence eliminated one of the suspects' rape and murder charges, and that he is no longer being charged by Tennessee. (He is still held on Federal charges as an accessory, for transporting the others.) After reading the affadavit for a warrant to gather his DNA, plus the Grand Jury indictment of the other four, I find this believable. But I find lots of information that is not carried by the reputable news sources...which makes me believe it is exaggerated. I do not know where you get your fact, but I think it actually qualifies as an opinion. I oppose performing a test of the same situation with races reversed, just to see how the press covers it. Guess what comes out of the woodwork when it's alleged that five blacks selected two whites as their victims? I have to use URLs because I am reluctant to even quote many of the things that are said [the reader is warned]: https://web.archive.org/web/20080501170001/http://intolerant.wordpress.com/ http://readthis.wordpress.com/2007/05/13/charlie-daniels-speaks-out-on-channon-christian/ (especially the comments) http://readthis.wordpress.com/2007/04/18/suspect-in-channon-christian-murder-in-court/ (again, the comments) https://web.archive.org/web/20111011041953/http://www.amren.com/mtnews/archives/2007/05/the_knoxville_h.php (some say this guy added sexual mutilation embellishment to the story) Below the Mason-Dixon Line, those comments that classify blacks as something less than human are still seen as racist, aren't they? Sadly, it became a symbol of separatists who wanted to isolate themselves from an evolving world.) Good news does not sell nearly as well as horrendous news. Maybe we need to feel indignant about something. What I do not understand is why a movie with an unhappy ending does not sell. Maybe someone should start a travel agency that specializes in vacations in Iraq, so people could see all the good stuff first hand! It would be such great publicity, our government might be willing to subsidize the trip!
