UPS takes step forward toward commercial package deliveries with drones – Atlanta Business Journal

The Federal Aviation Administration on Monday OK’d United Parcel Service Inc. limited authority to begin making small deliveries using drones.

In July, UPS (NYSE: UPS) applied to the FAA to operate commercial drone flights in the UPS network under a subsidiary business, UPS Flight Forward Inc. The company plans drone flights beyond an operator’s visual line of sight, and for flights occurring day or night. Such flights are highly restricted in the United States and approved only by exception.

The FAA on Monday granted UPS an exemption “to the extent necessary to allow UPS FF to conduct small UAS air carrier operations” subject to certain conditions and limitations.

Two of Atlanta’s top CEOs attend White House state dinner

Two of Atlanta’s top CEOs attended the Sept. 20 White House state dinner for the prime minister of Australia.

The list of more than 170 expected guests for the event honoring Scott Morrison included David Abney, chairman and CEO of United Parcel Service Inc. (NYSE: UPS), and Dan Cathy, CEO of Chick-fil-A Inc., and their wives, The Washington Post reported.

And no, Chick-fil-A sandwiches were not served at the dinner. The menu’s first course was Sunchoke Ravioli with Reggiano Cream and Shaved Summer Vegetables, followed by the main course of Dover Sole, roasted whole, then fileted and accented with Fennel Mousseline.

United Parcel Service in early 2018 announced more than $12 billion in investments to expand the company’s Smart Logistics Network and significantly increase pension funding, attributing the move to the Trump administration’s tax law changes through the Tax and Jobs Act.

UPS paying $2.25 million to avoid pregnancy discrimination lawsuit – Freightwaves

The agreement reached with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) will provide payment to UPS workers who weren’t properly compensated while they were pregnant between 2012 and 2014. The settlement payment will be primarily the difference between short-term disability payments they received and the amount they would have received if they had been allowed to work, according to the EEOC.

The agency pointed out that until UPS changed its pregnancy policy in 2015, the company had provided light-duty assignments to employees who had been injured on the job, those with certain driving restrictions and those with disabilities – but not to pregnant employees. A UPS driver subsequently alleged that not doing so violated the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA), which amended the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by prohibiting pregnancy discrimination.

The agreement also clarifies that UPS’ obligation to pregnant workers extends to both unionized and non-unionized workers.
