Look Out FedEx and UPS — Is Amazon Going To Disrupt The Shipping Industry? – Forbes

Amazon started out in the book business. Their online model disrupted the retail book industry. They moved into other items and eventually their online presence changed and disrupted the entire retail industry. But they didn’t stop there. Moving into the grocery industry, they acquired traditional brick-and-mortar stores such as Whole Foods. Again, they became an industry disrupter. So which industry is next?

One industry that has been a beneficiary of Amazon’s success has been the shipping industry. FedEx, UPS, and the USPS have earned billions of dollars as a result of the massive amount of product customers order from Amazon. But that is about to change.

Combo of 3D printing and fast shipping will lead next industrial revolution – or disrupt it – FreightWaves

3D printing first became feasible in 1981. In recent years the technology has been adopted by an increasing number of manufacturing companies to develop cheap prototypes for testing and to efficiently produce spare parts. 3D printing can produce any complex solid object with computer-aided design. Manufacturing applications for 3D printing include a wide range of complex machines from jet engines and smartphones to more simple goods like toys.

Fast Radius has the backing of UPS to manufacture products for its global supply-chain.

“3D printing is becoming the face of manufacturing and distribution,” said David Abney, UPS Chairman and CEO. “It allows manufacturers to go from mass production to custom production.”

Fast Radius’s presence is growing across UPS’s distribution network. Abney stated that there is now a 3D factory located at the UPS All-Points Hub in Louisville, Kentucky. He also asserted that UPS will be able to take orders for a non-existing product and deliver it the next day.

EU court paves way for $2 billion UPS claim as annuls TNT bid veto – Reuters

Europe’s top court opened the way to a $2 billion damages claim by U.S. delivery company UPS (UPS.N) on Wednesday by annulling a 2013 decision to stop it buying Dutch firm TNT Express.

The European Court of Justice said the ruling followed a procedural error by the European Commission in its veto, which paved the way for FedEx Corp (FDX.N) to acquire TNT Express for 4.4 billion euros in 2016, a deal it approved.

UPS, which has said it is seeking 1.74 billion euros ($1.98 billion) from the European Commission, said it was pleased the court agreed that the company had been given a fair hearing.
