As Planet Warms, Advocates Urge U.S. To Set Rules To Protect Workers From Heat – WLRN

Two years ago, James Klenk of Freehold, N.J. suffered a heat stroke and went into renal failure after several days sorting and unloading heavy boxes in the back of a UPS truck. He had been a driver for UPS for 14 years and almost died that day.

Klenk is one of countless workers across the country enduring symptoms of heat stress. High temperatures can pose health threats on a daily basis, including confusion, fatigue, and dehydration. More extreme heat can lead to heat stroke and organ failure, depending on a worker’s environment and how quickly treatment is administered.

Firefighters and a state hazmat team cleaned up a potential chemical spill inside an 18-wheeler parked off of Boston Street Monday afternoon.

A UPS driver was making a delivery just after noon when he noticed a chemical smell inside his truck’s trailer, according to Lynn Fire Chief Stephen Archer. The driver immediately closed the truck, parked it deep in a lot, away from the street and businesses, and called the fire department.

“He did everything right,” Archer said of the driver. “He did what he was supposed to do.”

Court reinstates ADA claims made by fired UPS worker – Business Insurance

A federal appeals court has reinstated Americans With Disabilities Act claims filed by a fired 25-year United Parcel Service Inc. worker against the company, concluding there was “substantial circumstantial evidence” and “suspicious timing” surrounding her termination.

Linda Rowlands was initially fired by a unit of Atlanta-based UPS in July 2012 for allegedly changing the time on her time card, according to Friday’s ruling by the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago in Linda Rowlands v. United Parcel Service-Fort Wayne.

She was reinstated after she filed a union grievance and returned to work in September 2012, while still recovering from knee surgery. But her employee ID was never reactivated and “there were other signs that her days at UPS were numbered,” according to the ruling.
