WSJ: E-commerce is big problem for UPS – Atlanta Business Chronicle

Free shipping on online orders, fierce competition from other delivery services, and Amazon’s power to drive down shipping costs are creating problems for Atlanta-based United Parcel Service.

UPS’s (NYSE: UPS) average revenue on each Internet-related package it handles is dropping, the Wall Street Journal reports in a story published Thursday that includes an interview with the Atlanta-based company’s new chief executive officer David Abney.

“Even though net income last year was the highest ever at UPS, profit margins on deliveries in the U.S. have been flat for three years, a sign that online sales aren’t helping the bottom line as much as they used to,” WSJ reports.

United Parcel Service, Inc. Shares: Stuck In Traffic – Benzinga

United Parcel Service, Inc. stock has been trying to recover after coming out with disappointing earnings in late July. Will the current upside be sustainable or is it just a bounce in a bear market?

UPS shares have been climbing gradually over the last few weeks following a nasty sell-off related to their most recent earnings report.

The stock’s rise of late may be at least in part attributable to the downward pressure on crude oil prices – which can obviously have a beneficial effect on all transportation issues that rely on gas for their fleets. How much more will continued downward pressure help UPS counteract the influences on stop-and-start global growth?
