The last time I went to Cancun was 1987, so my info would be too out dated to help you. This is a great time of year to go. Cancun is probably one of the safest destinations in Mexico to go just because of the tourism. I only went to Tulum as a tourist site. It was incredible. Cancun was my first major trip and we took a van taxi from the airport which (at that time) was located in the jungle. The first time you lay eyes on the aqua colored water a hush came over the entire taxi.... then there was a gasp and in unison "ahhhh". We took taxis or walked where ever we went and a tourist bus to Tulum. My wife and I spent our time basking in the sun, snorkeling or catamaran sailing (all in the lagoon area) while we were there. It depends on what you like for water sports. The lagoon is great for sailing and snorkeling and the ocean side is more for wave sports and lots of wind. I prefer the lagoon. So pick your accommodations accordingly. Warning - I don't care what they say - DON'T DRINK THE WATER. Drink only bottled water and don't overeat - no ice cubes. Small meals kills bacteria in stomach much easier and you will probably not have a problem. Remember - most restaurants cook with water and as long as you eat light you should be OK. A full stomach allows bacteria to grow. Of the people I know who got sick, it was eating too much that caused the sickness. Believe me, you do not want to get sick down there... it seems to last for about two months without meds. Oh! The nightlife is killer. It is like New Year's Eve every night. It starts around 10 PM and goes to sunrise and most nightclubs. If you get to a nightclub at 8 PM it will seem dead. Don't go to Cancun during hurricane season either. The next four months are the perfect time to go.
