Lower Cost Logistics Likely to Drive UPS’ Freight Delivery Business - Trefis

United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS) is trying to capitalize on the shift in customer preference towards economical means of shipping freight and packages. UPS recently announced the addition of a low-cost rail solution for transporting full container loads (FCL) between China and Europe. The adoption of the low-cost rail service and improving trade relations between China and Europe, should help drive UPS’s freight volume and revenues.

AFAIK, there are weekly rail trips between Western China and Southwest Poland with further connections to countries west of Poland. Hewlett-Packard has these trips for at least one year now. Deutsche Bahn in connection with Schenker is organizing this. A train trip takes about 7 - 10 days (IIRC). Critical Control Points on this route are the various Customs offices in each border train station as well as significantly increased transport security arrangements.
